These volumes, the fourth and fifth, complete the series of biographical sketches of students at Princeton University (the College of New Jersey in colonial times). They cover pivotal years for both the nation and the College. In 1784, the war with England had just ended. Nassau Hall was still in a shambles following its bombardment, and the College was in financial distress. It gradually regained financial and academic strength, and the Class of 1794 graduated in the year of the death of President John Witherspoon, one of the most important early American educators.

The introductory essay by John Murrin, editor of the series since 1981, explores the postwar context of the College. The two volumes contain biographies of 354 men who attended with the classes of 1784 through 1794 and two other students whose presence at the College in earlier years has only now been demonstrated. During these years Princeton accounted for about an eighth of all A.B. degrees granted in the United States. It was the young republic's most "national" college, although it had nearly lost its New England constituency and was instead beginning to draw nearly 40 percent of its students from the South.

Anthony Peardew is the Keeper of Lost Things. About the Author

Romance, passion, intrigue, humor, haunting...what's not to love?

This book was so utterly entertaining, delightful, and heartwarming that I gave it five stars for the sheer story-telling pleasure it gave me.

Anthony Peardew, a successful writer, has been a keeper of lost things for 40 years - ever since the day he lost a keepsake given to him by his beloved fiancée, Therese -- the same day she died in a tragic accident. In searching for his keepsake, he finds other lost things. He catalogues them carefully in hopes of reuniting them with their owners. They inspire him to write stories.

Laura, Anthony's housekeeper of several years, is lost herself after a painful divorce. When she unexpectedly inherits Anthony's home, she also inherits his lost things (with Anthony's request to try to find their owners), his gardener, Freddy, and his special neighbor Sunshine, a Downs syndrome teenager with special gifts of intuition and extrasensory perception.

Threaded skillfully into the narrative with effective use of flashback is the story of Eunice, who met the love of her life—Bomber—on the same day Anthony's fiancée was killed. Eunice and Bomber's own heartwarming story leads inexorably to a satisfying intersection with Laura and her lost things.

I came to love each of these deliciously quirky characters and was loathe to leave them when the book ended.

I didn't receive a free copy of this book. I loved it!! I was sad when I noticed how few pages were left because I wanted more of the stories. I highly recommend this to all hopeless romantics and lovers of a spiritual world.

I loved how Hogan intertwined the stories of the lost things with the lives of the people in the book, and with the people across two different time periods. I couldn't put it down, and didn't want it to end!

About the Author

Joseph Mayo practices architecture in the Pacific Northwest where he concentrates on materiality, technology and form for a regionally appropriate building culture. He has worked on a variety of building types, ranging from schools, student housing, university buildings and hospitals. Working with a City of Seattle Department of Planning and Development (DPD) Advisory Committee, Joseph led an investigation to use wood in applications that go beyond current building codes. He has also been a jury member for wood design awards, served as Regional Associate Director for the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Young Architect Forum (YAF) Chair at AIA Seattle, and has assisted in teaching courses and served on architecture critiques at universities around the Pacific Northwest.

Mayo's attempt to weave case studies of wood building systems from every corner of the world is astoundingly successful in convincing the architectural world of the approach's modernity and validity. He considers not just the environmental implications of the methods, but also the building code challenges, fire safety, structural considerations, and other critical topics in his analysis.

This book should be required-reading in any course on modern structural concepts or construction materials for architects and engineers.

Revived interest in wood construction

By boring deep into modern wood construction techniques, Joseph's Solid Wood piqued my interest as an opportunity to revisit architecture studies that I had enjoyed years ago during college classes. Joseph promptly covers critical issues of fire safety and moisture control as well as relevant terminology before moving on to several chapters of massive wood construction projects around the globe. Case studies in Norwegian Wood, budding United Kingdom housing developments, and Australia's timber down under all plant insight in the reader using ample construction photos and diagrams of project-specific techniques.

I worried this book would be overly technical when I placed a pre-order months ago; however, after receiving the book, I'm delighted to find the content appropriate for both a high level architecture class or a casual coffee table construction photo tome to thumb through.

Jake and Aubrey have written a book that is rich with anecdotes, statistics, and factoids; skillfully woven in one compelling narrative. This is the Africa that a growing number of global players are beginning to notice. This is the Africa that Africans live everyday; not the Africa that post-colonial and Cold War mindsets keeps fresh through the willing channel of conventional media. The Four Ps: Patience, Persistence, Partnership, and Personal Relationships are the lubricants for access to the vibrant potential that so seldom features in the dominant world view of Africa. "Understanding them [the 'Four Ps'], yields a comparative advantage. One could argue that applying these principles is important to navigating any business environment, but they are especially crucial in Africa."
"The Next Africa" should be required reading for anyone seeking to work or do business in or with the continent, not in the future alone, but today.

Very insightful read

I was born in West Africa and migrated to the US during middle school. Although I've significantly enjoyed the quality of life that comes from living in the US, I've always known I would return back to West Africa and work in some capacity there.

Since moving to the US, I was fortunate enough to graduate and transition in various financial roles. Still, more than ever, I am determined to return and focus on financial opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa. I give all this background to say that this book not only has been instrumental in helping me understand the culture, geography, and growth of the nation but it also has been incredibly effective in destroying the biases I had from my childhood in Nigeria.

The book warrants a read to understand the past of Sub-Saharan Africa. It succinctly answers the question "what on earth happened to this continent that is so rich with resources" and "where could it go from here" (side note: I had a fun time testing my dad about the major events and what his thoughts were about said events at the time).

Yet, the reason why this book has a special place on my shelf is how much it's aided me in my professional career (and it's only been a few months since I've read it!). I've been able to communicate with senior executives in a range of industries by bringing up key topics, discussions, and arguments made in this book. I have a better understanding of the business landscape, the multi-national players, and the key risks. I'm able to make informed opinions and have a more balanced view on the continent (although I'm admittedly a bit more cautious vs. the authors).

In addition, I enjoyed the frameworks and foundation the authors teach in regards to conducting business in the area. I appreciated the anecdotes from their personal experiences as it helped bridge the gap between theory and practical experiences.

I'm headed back to West Africa this year and I'm even more excited to witness the innovations and opportunities on the continent. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is even just somewhat curious about Sub-Saharan Africa (had to give my dad my copy just to challenge his preconceived notions).

In April 2014 Nigeria quietly passed South Africa as the largest economy in Africa, its GDP registering at $510 Billion – a staggering increase of 1,600% from its 1990 GDP of $31 Billion. The country also proudly announced the completion of a historic $1 Billion bond placement with J.P. Morgan to global investors. Then the primary facilitator of the bond issuance – Lamido Sanusi, the respected governor of its Central Bank – was fired by Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan, after he exposed a $20 Billion fraud involving state oil revenues being perpetrated by the President’s associates.
So goes one of the world’s most dynamic economies; always seemingly moving two steps forward and one step backward. And since reaching these economic milestones in 2014, the Nigerian economy has been beset by plummeting oil prices, currency devaluation, energy shortages and the continuing Boko Haram insurgency – resulting in its slowest economic growth in decades.
Despite this series of developments and the resulting slowdown, Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa remains one of the fastest growing regions in the world. This is reflected its foreign direct investment (FDI) levels in 2015, where FDI project numbers increased by 7% and despite all of this tumult Nigeria successfully transitioned to a new elected government affirming its commitment to democratic traditions.
In all these ways Nigeria reflects the enormous potential of Sub-Saharan Africa which is being realized in fits and starts, not unlike any region moving into second-world status. However, after spending the last five years traveling throughout Nigeria, Ghana and many other regions of the continent while developing shopping center and mixed-use projects I have no doubt that the “African Century” will not be denied despite all the obstacles that lie in its way.
In their new book “The Next Africa: An Emerging Continent Becomes A Global Power”, authors Jake Bright and Aubrey Hruby have provided a succinct and readable analysis of where Nigeria and the other fifty-plus countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are headed. not what i expected

i just recently received this book and was thinking ok another universal law book, same old same old. upon reading this book, i discovered that was not the case. i loved the fact that i could understand exactly what the author was saying, she didn't seem to speak in a way that i couldn't relate to or that was cryptic and confusing. i almost felt like this book was written just for me. the exercises included in this book made applying these laws into my everyday life so much easier. Twelve Universal Laws: The Truth That Will Transform Your Life, did just that. i feel like my eyes are open and i am walking on the path i was meant to, the way i was meant to. i can't say enough good things about this informative, inspirational, life changing book. not only do i recommend this book, i just ordered another one for a friend. love this book!!!!

A New Lease of Life for Marxist Analysis

Dr. Donald Donham's extremely readable account and analysis of what could easily have been a most boring subject matter is a must read. Not only for those Marxists tired of orthodoxy of all types, but also for those non-Marxists who never tire of bashing Marxists. Set amongst the Maale people of Ethiopia, this book takles a seemingly simple question that has been the bane of materialist analysis for as long as it has been in existence. The question itself is posed in the following way: Is the table top existing because of the four legs that hold it up? Or, is it equally reasonable to say that the four legs are "legs" only because the table top meaningfully allows them to be so. Else they would merely be four pieces of wood, and that too skewed since it is the top that makes then perfectly vertical!
The book deals with the question of how the Maale organize their labor and brings together liberal economics and Marxist anthropological theory together in a positive manner. It shows how the first set of theories have limitations that do not allow them to solve certain Maale "paradoxes." On the other hand the latter set of theories need to be reshaped in the light of ethnographic data from Third World countries and peoples such as the Maale.
A superb, humanistic and many times humorous book. Always with both feet firmly planted on the ground, the author also shows how Marxism necessarily must participate in the drama that is life. Thus, he successfully attempts to integrate the literary genres of Comedy, Tragedy, Irony and Romance into his clearly argued Marxist analysis. I will be using this book in my graduate level seminar on Social Theory.
