Instant Chef Starter is an introductory book about Chef, an open-source configuration management and automation platform. John Ewart and Packt Publishing have published a book that will allow a system administrator with no prior Chef experience to get Chef up and running within a day, if not a few hours, by using this guide. If one has already decided that buying a book is the best way to learn Chef basics, I can easily recommend this one.

The book opens with a clear introduction of Chef, along with descriptions of basic components, concepts, and terminology. The biggest benefit to using Chef, or any configuration management software, is to automate and ease the burden of multi-server administration.

(Note that John elected to omit Chef solo and hosted Chef from this book.)

The following section covers installation with a promise to give clear guidance on installation to Debian-based and Redhat-based distributions, as well as a source based install. While the Debian-based and source-based installation instructions were very clear and easy to follow, the Redhat-based instructions were missing. I'm sure that finding the proper installation method would not be difficult for most, and given most Chef users are Debian/Ubuntu proponents, this omission is minor.

Over the next few sections, John takes us through bootstrapping a Chef client, managing cookbooks, recipies, and attributes, as well as data bags and templates. I like the introduction via knife and the web UI and then moving onto knife for more command line power. This allows the reader to see both sides of Chef management and choose what might work best for them.

While this book was designed to introduce Chef to a beginner, I would have liked to see mention made of idempotent operations, source control backed cookbooks and recipes, as well as running chef-client regularly to maintain system state over time rather than ad-hoc execution.

While managing a few servers is not a daunting task for any but the most beginner of system administrator, I would have liked to see an example made mention of which better quantifies the benefits of using a configuration management tool-set once the servers being managed reaches the double digits or further. Take, for instance, the management of 30 servers. Once an operation must be performed on 30 servers that takes 2 minutes for each server, the result is 1 hour of time if no issues are discovered through the process. This could be off-set with Chef in under 10 minutes and off to more important tasks.

While I did find a couple of issues with the book, overall I enjoyed reading it, and found that it provided clear instruction on how to deploy Chef into an enterprise environment. I regularly use Chef to manage client systems and appreciate the benefits that it brings to a system administrator or devops engineer. Configuration management advances and brings standardization to the profession of system administration.

Just waste of money. Nothing clear. I bought this overpriced book along with Chef Infrastructure Automation and have feeling that first time my money is simply wasted. Opscode website has real good documents if you want to learn chef.

Severely in need of a rewrite to bring it current.

As I said in a replay to another post, this may have been a useful book a year and a half ago, but the codebase is so significantly changed that everything is obsolete. There is no need to add an apt repository. The versions of Ubuntu, Debian and Chef referenced are out of date. The dependencies are no longer dependencies as the current installer is complete. And the available documentation online is much more complete. Sure, it might get you familiar with the terminology and concepts, but the main website will do that. This is useless for the current versions of software and is in bad need of a rewrite to bring it current.

That being said, it might be a good resource for a Linux initiate who has very limited knowledge of Linux servers and needs to understand how the software works in general. But in that case, I would recommend other, more current books that can provide a better foundation for Linux and Chef. The online documentation is much more valuable than this book in its current revision.

This is going to be a quick review. I'll admit to being a little let down by this story. It was good...just not riveting. But I absolutely do not regret spending the time reading/listening to it.

The book is about Noah, a slightly flaming gay guy who's wracked with guilt over his partner's death. He's obviously gay and the party guy in this group of friends, but that happy exterior is hiding some dark secrets. The other half of this duo is Ky, a good old boy surgeon from Texas who's very much in the closet. He doesn't know what to do with Noah.

The two had good chemistry. It was just at times the story kind of dragged with the same mental debates over and over again. I think a few thousand words could have been cut and this book would have been stronger for it...because it was good. The story just didn't move fast enough...for my liking.

My two cents. It was good enough and definitely if you're a fan of the series, you will want to read Noah's story. There were moments that I really enjoyed and definite highlights. I loved the scenes at the ranch when finally things began to move forward.

a wonderful addition which is totally worth the wait...

How to review a book that grabbed my heart years before I read it... yes, I know it sounds crazy, but you heard me right. Noah is a significant character throughout The Boyfriend Chronicles. I have been waiting for his book for a long long time, and I have never been given such an amazing gift for my patience before. This is the third story in the series and for maximum reading pleasure I would say it's best to start with The Backup Boyfriend and The Boyfriend Mandate, or reread them as I did the past few days.
River Jaymes delivers an unforgettable masterpiece with The Boyfriend Makeover. Noah and Ky’s story has a relatively simple plot, but the magic happens when the writer gives this simple story so many layers, packing it with so many amazing feels that the book takes over... the story and the feelings it evokes in you take over... you live and breathe with the characters. It’s a rare, but wonderful experience you wouldn’t want to miss.

This book has everything I love in my MM romances. It has heart, amazing feels, unique characters, great depth, no unnecessary complications, and style. A style that grabs you on the first page and takes your whole being on an emotional journey you will likely never forget. I was crying at times, laughing out loud a lot. Noah is one of the greatest characters ever written. When you are in the middle of a heartbreaking scene and you are looking for a tissue, he delivers a line and you start laughing and crying some more with a huge grin on your face. I just LOVE him and this story from the bottom of my heart. We meet everyone from the previous books, see how happy they are, how they deal with some life-altering situations together, and how this wonderful group of friends form a unique family we love so much. Ky is the perfect partner who helps Noah live his life again the fullest. They have a wonderful chemistry, and a deepening connection that creates a sweet, heartwarming love story I’m going to read over and over again. Highly recommended!!!

Worth the wait!!!!!

River kills it once again! In this book, Noah Tanner is finally brought to his knees (not that he's complaining) by Dr. Kyland Davis. Let me tell you, the heat between these men was HOT! I'm talking boxer melting, need a pitcher of ice water, jaw dropping kinda hot! I love the fact that although they couldn't have been more opposites, they were made for each other. The patience of Ky and the direct attitude of Noah went together like gin and tonic. Oh! And the scenes.......*fans myself* SPOILER ALERT:I will never look at a paring knife the same again...or cowboy boots and rope for that matter, which is great being the Texas native that I am.
This book made me laugh, squirm, and made my eyes sweat (Noah's words for crying, not mine) with the turn of every page. Their journey to happily ever after was well worth the wait and you should BUY (not sample) THIS BOOK! No wait.....just start from the beginning and buy this series!

Valdez is back!

Rafe Valdez used to work as bodyguard to Glory St. Clair (heroine of Bartlett's Real Vampires series), but now that she's married it's time to douse the torch Rafe's carried for his boss and make a commitment to Lacy, his very pregnant were-cat love. Maybe past time, thinks Lacy, but before they can solve their differences, Rafe is whisked away to the island home of his shifter clan, where his immortal grandfather lies dying, poisoned by a witch. Rafe left the clan centuries ago, but now his grandmother expects him to rise to the occasion and save the family, when all Rafe really wants is to return to his new family in Texas.

Rafe and the Redhead is a spin-off from the Real Vampires series, and Glory's (and Bartlett's) fans will enjoy seeing old friends again and finding out more about Rafe and Lacy. But the story in this short novel, full of surprisingly human shapeshifters, vampires, and demons, stands alone, enjoyable even for newcomers to Glory's world.

Who Wouldn't Want More Rafe?

Rafe And The Redhead is a spin-off from the Real Vampires series starring Glory St. Claire. Rafe concentrates on Glory’s former bodyguard, shifter Rafael Valdez and his lover Lacy, a very pregnant were-cat. When Rafe is whisked off at gunpoint to the island home of his ancient clan, he finds his immortal grandfather on his deathbed. While Lacy chases Rafe and Rafe chases his grandfather’s attempted killer, we learn a lot about Rafe’s history and a little about his and Lacy’s future. Some very interesting characters, ranging from witches to demons, are introduced during the non-stop action, and we can only hope there are more stories to come in this delightful series.

Finally, some Rafael & Lacy backstory as the main story unfolds. Really fun read.

I loved that we finally get to see more about the shifters and even get to know more about Rafael's demon heritage. With his grandfather poisoned and dying Rafe is forced to go home to try and save his life. Of course it is the worst timing possible with Lacy very pregnant with his triplets.

A definite must read!

Amazing information for using assistive technology in iOS

I got this as a gift and it is an easy read. When I finished reading it, I realized that I had a wealth of information about configuring the different assistive technologies on the iPhone and iPad. Also, how to use them and the commands for braille and wireless keyboards when I am testing iOS apps for accessibility. It also includes all the gestures and different kinds taps. A must book for developers doing iOS accessibility testing.

The author of this book has taught many short courses on DMA and this shows in his book…This reviewer found the last chapter, on the section on the application of DMA to real problems to be very useful…This book should be quite useful to someone who is just beginning to do thermal methods and wants to include DMA among the methods used.

I'm hoping for an expanded second edition....

I ordered this book based on the other review here onamazon.com and was looking for a bit more. A fair bit of the contentis already covered by free application notes on the web and sales literature that the makers of DMA instrumentation pass out for free. If your looking for a solid treatment of the polymer physics of DMA testing, that's not this book; maybe it hasn't been written yet. If you just want to relate DMA testing to real world environments and effects, then there aren't enough good examples in the book or a method to make this book worth the price.
This would make an acceptable guide for a technician who was just introduced to a DMA - I was looking for more.

I spent many hours researching for a Thermal Mechanical textbook that was packed full of "Get Down To The Point Answers". Let's face it, there are not many current Thermal Analysis textbooks for sale. The books I've seen are too scrambled with no understanding at the end. This book was VERY informative, and it answered my questions. Special Thanks to the author. Please write many more books with the same intentions in mind: "We would like to understand and learn from what we read"! Thank You!
