Hi Readers,

We had a lot of fun writing this series. It was a project that had been on the back-burner for years--waiting until the time was right and our writing schedules aligned. Over 17,000 emails between me and Amy in Australia, Lucy in Spain and Heidi in London. We created a Pub, Sully's, in New York and I so wanted that place to be real. We created a facebook page for the series,wine labels, boarding school uniforms, timelines and many, many brothers. We went overboard (I blame the others, and possibly the wine).

My ever loving gratitude to the other authors in the series--Heidi, Lucy and Amy--for making this one sing.

Wonderful start to the series.

Pursued by the Rogue (Fairy Tales of New York 1) by Kelly Hunter is the first story in a series of four friends, I really enjoyed this story that set the stage of hoe these four women became friend while in boarding school. Skip to ten years later and the story takes off.

All four of the women are strong and talented in their own fields, though none of them are as brainy as Dawn. I was amazed that this intelligent woman felt so inadequate in her appearance then blooms into other perceived inadequates, but she did make a convincing ugly duckling.

Besides the obvious changes in the story, I loved the idea that her true love saw her as a beautiful woman, hence the swan. Finn makes a wonderful hero especially since he had never forgotten Dawn in 10 years.

Wonderful start to friends of four fairytales, dealing with fears and anxieties that are al o real. Ms. Hunter wrote this story in such a way to cause the reader to have great empathy for Dawn and Finn. I was on edge with them at the doctor’s office waiting to hear the test results.

I look forward to the all of the other friend’s stories. Each of them need an Happily Ever After. The way all good fairytales should end.

A short but well told romance in the ‘Fairy Tales of New York’ series, I enjoyed my first story by this author. Smart, driven and socially awkward Dawn Turner has been in love with smart, driven, not socially awkward Finbar Sullvan since she was a teenager. During their younger years, Dawn and Fin had a single indiscretion that went further and had more repercussions that either of them ever planned. After 10 years of no contact, can these two put aside their past to build a future?

For someone who was hurt by and didn’t like secrets, Dawn kept some big things secrets. Even with that in mind, I still liked her because she wanted to be a good person. She didn’t take things for granted and she wasn’t spiteful with her actions or in-actions. It’s a credit to the writing because it’s a fine line between an angst filled heroine and a whiny heroine – Dawn remained the former. There was enough character growth and development for her that I didn’t understand her choices.

I thought Fin was great. He had enough boy-next-door humor, humility, and moments of vulnerability without being too contrived that I really wanted him to get his girl. His patience with Dawn was refreshing but I was also glad to see that he didn’t present himself as the doormat either.

There were some delicate topics that were introduced but got swept under the rug that I wish didn’t happen but I also understand that this is a novella. I highly recommend this, if you’re in the mood for a quick but satisfying read about a couple of 20-somethings falling in love and getting their HEA.

Lovely novella , great start to a series

A wonderful start to the Fairytales of New York series; Ms Hunter brings a fresh look at The Ugly Duckling fairytale.

Dawn Turnsr is a successful biotech company owner , but for all of her success, she's a lonely women, of her own choice;as a young girl at boarding school she very often felt like an outsider the ugly duckling amongst her girlfriends , sent away by her parents to her Aunts in New York she feels unloved.
Everyone she takes a chance on loving , she feels she looses, so when her freind Kathleen's brother Finnbar takes intrest in her though she has an incredible night with him, she pushes him away.

Ten years later , encouraged by her school friends to get together for a reunion , she never imagined running into Finn also ; or for that matter for Finn to still be interested in her! Finn is everything she feels she is not, handsome outgoing popular violinist , travels the world and could have any women he wants. So, why want an ugly ducking like her,, with her secrets, even without them her family did not want her..

Finn has spent the last ten years thinking about Dawn , and her brush off ten years ago, he did not understand it then , he was sure they had a connection, no relationship since has felt as right . Seeing Dawn. She is even more beautiful now and he is determined to get her to agree to date him again.

Dawn has set up her line of defense , so she doesn't get hurt, determined to be the one in control, no lose or pain for her and she flat out tells Finn , she is willing to casually date but it is sex only, no commitments . Finn accepts her terms but it's just to get his foot in the door because he wants more , always has! Finn has to work to break through her line of defense and unlock the secrets Dawn keeps , along with the one she keeps from him.
Can Finn get Dawn to see what everyone else really sees? Can he get her to reveal her secrets? Can he get her to give them a real chance?

365 Bedtime Stories

Several people have commented on the content of many stories not being suitable for small children, and I agree with that. Some of the stories are wonderful, some are gruesome, and some are dull. Overall I do not recommend this book. Additionally, the stories are of an inconsistent length making it difficult as "bedtime" reading book. Some are long, and some are less than a paragraph. This can be frustrating for both the child and the parent. Then there are the "variations" which are included as a story for the day but normally are not stories. They simply tell how the tale differs in different areas. To be blunt these variations are exceedingly boring.

Not appropriate for small children

I'm sorry I didn't see the review from "A reader from USA , August 9, 1998", but I agree with the assessment. I purchased this book to read to my 5 year old daughter. I began to read a couple aloud, but found I needed to seriously edit them, or stop reading entirely. Now, I preview each story before I begin - and I find I'm skipping most of them. For example, the first story I selected told the disturbing tale of a bird that helps an abandoned dog find food and rest only to watch him get run over and killed. The bird then seeks revenge on the driver and succeeds in having him killed.

A Haitian by birth, Fatton (government and foreign affairs, Univ. of Virginia) has written a somewhat pessimistic analysis of politics in Haiti from 1986 to the end of 2001. He sees this period as starting on a positive note with the promise that democracy would succeed and then goes on to examine the numerous changes of government from the fall of the Duvalier dictatorship in 1986 to Jean-Bertrand Aristide's second inauguration as president in December 2001. The author suggests that Haiti's experience shows that for democracy to succeed in any country, there needs to be a balance of power between two competing classes, the bourgeoisie and the workers. The absence of strong political organizations from both classes in Haiti has led to a power vacuum and the consequent failure of democratic institutions. The result is what Fatton calls "predatory democracy," which has the trappings of democracy but functions more like authoritarianism or polyarchy. This book will be of interest to libraries with collections on the Caribbean and general political theory.

The disinformation narrative continues...

This is a good addition to the anti-democracy propaganda section of your research library. Like Abbie Hoffman liked to say, "Steal this Book." Check it out in your library, get the cheapest used version you can. Whatever you do, don't support the institutions that employ Robert Fatton. Of course, that would probably mean becoming a radical tax protestor too; not something that I recommend.

Fatton has a long history of enabling the New American Empire's misinformation campaign against the pro-democracy struggle in Haiti. Using rabid reactionary revisionist sources -- like Lynn Garrison: "Voodoo Politics" -- as "source" material, Fatton reconstitutes their mythomaniacal fabrications to make them more suitable for "respectable" research material. The penetration of the historical record by the Intelligence Community is a treacherous subject to study. The massive disinformation effort unleashed on Haiti over the years should have its own Holocaust Museum.

Transition from Authoritarianism to People Power, A Difficult Process

Observers of Haiti's political, social and economic development will be brought to reality by Dr. Fatton's work.

"The process of democratization that has marked the modern history of Haiti.... suggest that the transition from authoritarianism to populism was a function of the ascendancy of the civil society and, in particular, popular civil society," says Fatton (pp. 1-2).

He argues that the classical model adopted for the democratization of Haiti has many inherent weaknesses.

While it may have removed military authoritarianism, it has retained the institutionalized structures of dictatorship, legacies of the State, which are deeply entrenched in the society.

Consequently, the Country today, has an unconsolidated, dysfunctional democracy which is characterized by brutality, and the treachery of the bourgeoisie who monopolizes state power and wealth.

This is what Fatton deems to be a "Predatory democracy."

Dr. Fatton is of Haitian ancestry or Haitian by birth. He appears to write not only for the Haitian people but also as one of them.

He is a brilliant intellectual and scholar, not a revolutionary like "Old"Toussaint, Dessalines or Regaud, the lesser.

However, his predictive skills as a political scientist are brilliant.

I do not share all of Dr. Fatton's views on Aristide, bearing in mind the historical difficulties facing that Country and the obvious geo-political problems of that region.

The work is fairly easy to read. I highly recommend it to students and general readers.

A well researched look at modern politics in Haiti

This book presents a very thorough explanation of the political situation in Haiti since the fall of the Duvaliers. Because it was published in 2002 it obviously does not discuss the most recent events in Haiti, but the book is a very useful tool in understanding what is going on in that country now. The author actually predicted the events of Jan-Feb 2004 as a possibility of what could happen in that country. I give it a 4-star rating because the language is somewhat dense; the book is not for the casual reader.

Gay-Themed Fantasy Page Turner That More Than Holds Its Own Against Other Books In the Genre

Citiyo Dreams is an interesting supernatural-fantasy tale about a young man named Citiyo Jackson who discovers that the world isn't quite the way he had always thought it to be. While arriving to school one morning with his best friend Ruby, he meets a charismatic young man named Jon. Jon, as it turns out, possesses a number of supernatural abilities along with the rest of his family. As Citiyo is drawn in to the drama of Jon's life, the two begin to fall in love with one another, but ultimately this love is tested by fate and forces seemingly beyond their control. Ultimately, Citiyo discovers that he also possesses great powers, but must learn how to control them in order to not hurt the ones around him who he cherishes the most.

One could easily say that this is a gay version of Twilight, but that wouldn't do Citiyo Dreams justice. Author Jamie Assiah does a remarkably good job at teasing out Citiyo's complex personality, that seems torn between obligations to family and the desire to make his own path in life. He already faces stigmatization due to being biracial, but the loneliness he feels is only compounded by his sexual orientation. The supporting characters are also drawn beautifully, including the lovely minister's daughter Ruby and the ever-supportive yet bluntly speaking grandpa.

Above all else, Citiyo Dreams is an emotionally-satisfying, provocative tale that will keep readers turning the page. In fact, it is easy enough to read the whole novel in just two sittings, because it is just that good. The love between Jon and Citiyo is authentic, and isn't rushed or over sexual. It develops slowly during the course of the novel, and I was more than happy to follow this transformation of their relationship as it blossomed. Overall, it is rare to find a homosexual relationship portrayed in fantasy fiction that isn't overtly sexual and reduced tor random acts of sex. With Jon and Citiyo, the reader cares for them and their relationship, and that helps to set up the emotional drama that follows as the story reaches its end.

The ending itself really showcases the talents of the writer Jamie Assiah. Unlike so many other books within the fantasy genre, the resolution to the story isn't wrapped in a neat package where everything is worked out for the better and life seems perfect. Instead, the ending is true to the way things often happen in the real world. Citiyo must endure difficult lessons and accept hard truths in order to grow as an individual and follow his own journey in life. At the conclusion, he has become a different man, but hasn't fully achieved everything he desires.

Nice....

Im not the kind who would read a book like this but props gotta be given where they are due. Well written with believable characters and a well thought out plot. I could see this appeal to those who liked Twilight although it's more like it shares the same genre rather than being a wannabe or copycat.

Guess Kindle has become some sorta clearinghouse for wannabe authors who put out lacklustre books who never would have been published otherwise but this is an exception and well worth reading. Very original.
