"Best Sports Medicine Book I've Ever Used! August 22, 2001; Reviewer: A reader from Vancouver, B.C. Canada; The Second edition of Clinical Sports Medicine is the best reference book I have come across as an athletic therapist and professional fitness and lifestyle consultant. I find it very easy to navigate with great illustrations and information. The references are all very recent and evidence-based so you feel confident in following the authors' recommendations. It is particularly good value at 67 US dollars - most hardcover books of this size are about twice that price. The corresponding website has updated information, including relevant published papers, which I find quite helpful also. These authors have really done a fabulous job of classifying sports medicine information in a logical and easy-to-use format. I highly recommend it to anyone in the sports, fitness, and/or health fields! 2nd edition already a big hit, November 27, 2000; Reviewer: Karim Khan from Vancouver, BC Canada; Author review; The 2nd edition (2001) is now readily available worldwide. It contains 7 new chapters and every chapter has been fully updated. It contains practical guidelines for shoulder pain management (with Ben Kibler), new management of anterior knee pain (with Jenny McConnell) and guidelines as to how to teach pelvic stability for patients in treatment of back pain. It includes a complete update of management of tendon injuries incorporating recent advances in treatment (with Jill Cook, Hakan Alfredson, etc). Medical chapters include updates on drugs in sport, managing heat illness and ethics in sport. Large, practical chapters describe sports medicine care for the female athlete, the pediatric athlete, the disabled athlete and seniors. This 918 page hardcover 2nd edition, with over 900 illustrations, is extremely good value. We would argue the best value of any clinical sports medicine text, and this is reflected by this edition selling almost 10,000 copies already. The New Zealand Journal of Sports Medicine recently reviewed this edition and said 'The world's best sports medicine book just got better'....Check it out for yourself! Excellent practical book for clinicians, June 28, 2000; Reviewer: A reader from seatle, USA; This very practical book that uses symptom-oriented chapters to provide very helpful guidance to anyone who sees sports medicine patients. It is useful for physical therapists (like me) but my colleagues who are doctors and masseurs also use it. I thoroughly recommend it and find its illustrations of physical examination particularly useful.

Karim Khan, MD, PhD, FACSP, FSMA, FACSM, Dip Sport Med, is Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, Canada, Consultant at the Allan McGavin SPorts Medicine Centre, and a Sports Physician at the Olympic Games, Sydney 2000.

Great book for military medicine!

I'm a new Physician Assistant in the US Army. As most military providers (particularly, Army and Marines) will tell you, we see a LOT of orthopedic and sports medicine injuries. I recently ordered this book as part of setting up my unit clinical library and it has quickly become a cornerstone of my practice. I see about 22-30 patients a day in a primary care setting, and 50-70% are orthopedic/sports medicine. I HIGHLY recommend this book, particularly to a military provider! It will fast become your best friend!

If I had to choose just one book to be on my shelf as a Primary Care Sportsmedicine Physician with a CAQ, this book would be it! Outstanding book in every way. Well written, concise with excellent illustrations and is evidence based. This book is written for the primary care FP to a fellowship trained sports medicine person. Great for all providers, PA's, NP's, ATC's and PT's......

Comprehensive and covers just about every topic in Sportsmedicine. Can't go wrong with this purchase.

About the Author
Marie Luise Knott is a journalist, translator, and author living in Berlin. In 1995 she founded the German edition of Le Monde diplomatique and has been its editor-in-chief for the past eleven years. Barley touches the surface

Very simplistic, and not in a good way, in its attempt to bring to light the unique talents that Arendt made use of in uncovering and disclosing her ideas and thoughts. One would literally have to meditate on each brief example given in order to truly comprehend the methods Arendt used (and one can do that without reading the book). A very short and unfruitful book.

Board Work offers a simple yet powerful model for governance

Board Work is as clear and practical a work on governance as I've ever read. I commend it to new and experienced board members, to the chairs of governance committees charged with board improvement, and to the executives who staff boards.
As a trustee and governance consultant, I know these authors and have heard them speak -- and it was a pleasure to see how well the book transfers their years of experience into print.
The book works so well because it is built on a straight-forward model that the authors carry throughout every chapter. The model suggests that healthcare boards (and most other boards, for that matter) have five central roles: defining organizational ends, ensuring management performance; overseeing financial performance; overseeing quality; and providing for the board's own structure, composition and effectiveness. Boards carry out these roles in three ways: by making policies, making decisions, and overseeing performance. One of the book's strongest components is explaining how - in order to define organizational ends - a board identifies the organization's stakeholders and their expectations. Few boards do this at all, much less do it well.
Board Work joins books by John Carver, William Bowen, Cyril Houle and Richard Chaitt as an exceptional contribution to the emerging body of pragmatic governance literature.
I recommend it highly.

This book provides excellent tools and guidleines to take governance into the 21st century. Dennis Pointer and James Orlikoff provide fresh ideas and insights into how boards can effectively and successfully enhance their organizations. This book should be read by every health care board who wants to make a difference in their organization.

About the Author
A dedicated professional, Mary Ellen Guffey has taught business communication and business English topics for more than 35 years. She received a bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Bowling Green State University; a master's degree from the University of Illinois; and a doctorate in business and economic education from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She has taught at the University of Illinois, Santa Monica College, and Los Angeles Pierce College. Now recognized as the world's leading business communication textbook author, Dr. Guffey is the founding author of three award-winning textbooks: BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: PROCESS AND PRODUCT, ESSENTIALS OF BUSINESS COMMUNICATION, and BUSINESS ENGLISH. Each updated book continues to lead its market and, together, these books have helped hundreds of thousands of students around the world develop language skills. Dr. Guffey serves on the review boards of the Business and Professional Communication Quarterly and the Journal of Business Communication, publications of the Association for Business Communication. Dana Loewy has been teaching business communication at California State University, Fullerton since 1996. ) this is a good book to have

Required book for my college class. If you go to Baker College in Michigan you can actually get through the class without this book. I have used it once for an in class assignment and a few other times as reference for formatting. For the formatting I could have just looked it up online or used another book I already owned.
The contents of the book are okay, if you are wanting something up to date to use as a reference when writing an work related material (professional emails, memos, etc.) this is a good book to have. But it is horribly over priced.

About the Author
Arthur Benjamin is a professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California. He is also a professional magician and performs his mixture of math and magic all over the world.

Beware of duplication

I bought a copy of Secrets of Mental Maths. As a trained scientist and a professional magician I was interested in the contents, and was not disappointed. Great stuff here for impressing people, and useful techniques for making maths fun. However the Amazon website offered two books togehter - this book and another by the same authors; Think Like A Maths Genius. I ordered both, and was shocked when they were delivered. The second book (Think Like A Maths Genius) was just Secrets of Mental Maths with a different cover. Amazon should have known both were the same book and should not have offered them both together. Don't be caught out by this. That aside, I highly recommend buying one or other version of this book.

Great for SAT/GRE study!

I am a professional SAT/GRE teacher and tutor, achieving an 800 in the GRE math section. After telling many students that the secret to the math section is mental math and approximation, I decided to see what books were available. I saw that this one had good reviews and ever since then I have been bringing the book to all my classes and tutoring sessions. I recommend this book for those who never felt they got the hang of math as well as people who love it like I do. It is clearly written, very encouraging and has lots of drills.
I love this book and I think that it really will help people feel more confident when they take a test or just are trying to figure the tip.

Right to the point, effective, and fun!

At first glance, this book could easily be overlooked and dismissed as another "just buy this book and follow my easy steps to becoming a (genius, millionaire, happier person, psychic, master gardener, whatever)" that would utimately leave you disappointed that you couldn't do it.

Well, this book is not that. It gets right to the point. It's very well written. It's fun. It's practical. And as long as you take your time to mentally practice what you're learning along the way, you can and should be able to master the techniques in this book. You needn't have any mathematical expertise going in. Of course, the author doesn't promise anything special about what you can do with these abilities, although there are some practical applications suggested along the way. All I can say is that it's fun and gives you something interesting to do with your brain when you're bored. And certainly if you like Math already or are a Math teacher, it can be tremendously helpful.

Arthur Benjamin wrote the main content of the book, and Michael Shermer (Skeptic Magazine founder and Scientific American columnist) wrote introductory and closing chapters. These seem a little out of place to me, but they're certainly very good and useful general information about critical thinking. In addition to Bill Nye's (The Science Guy) new intro, James Randi's (famous magician and skeptic) introduction from an earlier edition is included.

decent content, AWFUL formatting

I'm a 4th year med student on my ICU rotation and I got this book (kindle edition) because I wanted something more concise than the Marino text but more detailed than a quick reference book. I think this does fit the bill, but I just can't get over the poor formatting of the kindle edition. The algorithms have great content (better content than the written text) but require zooming in because it's too small and then zooming out because zooming in makes it too blurry. Even simple equations set into the text are blurry. Most pages are only half full of text because the figures are set specifically between particular lines. I got the paperback Wash Manual of Medical Therapeutics and loved the electronic edition (through "Inkling") and was hoping this would be similar. Apparently Marino's new edition also comes with an Inkling edition. Now I find out I am ONE day late in returning this Kindle e-book (I had no idea you could return kindle books until now) for a refund that I probably would've put into buying the paperback edition of this book. Mad at myself and really mad at whoever is responsible for the Kindle edition of this book.

wonderful quick-reference book

The algorithms and charts make this book an excellent REFERENCE. I like the tiny print size and full color better than The ICU Book for reviewing things quickly, but for that same reason reading it is not as pleasant. The topics covered are also not completely identical, and in some ways this book lacks the detail and basic information for an intern or medical student that the other provides.

I own the paper version. In general, Kindle medical references are awful, this one included.

Terrible Kindle formatting

The formatting of kindle version is terrible. Tables and flowcharts are low resolution and blurry; basically unreadable.
Get the print version.
