Amazed!!

Francine Rivers has become my favorite author. The story of Ruth has made me long to be an example of a Godly woman ,of this century. I can only struggle to put my feelings into words..when Francine Rivers paints beautiful word pictures in our minds as we read her work. Ruth and her devotion,I want to be like her!! As i look into my young daughters eyes..i am in wonder on how to raise a child to have such passion for God like Ruth. May the story of Ruth make everyone who reads of her, be inspired to continue on in their lifes journey with a new perspective.. Thank you Francine Rivers, for giving us deep soul searching books that challenge us women to go on...

When faith brings grace...

When I first picked up this book, I began to read it with my safety net of doubt firmly in place. Most of the biblical fiction I've encountered over the years have been full of stiff dialog or narrowly researched story lines that lose the readers interest in it's quest to drive home a moral or spiritual point. This one is different.
Rivers tossed that bad habit of stiff dialog out the window when she wove together this partly fictional account of Ruth, Naomi and Boaz. As one of my favorite stories since I was a little girl, it was so warming to read more about Ruth, and I was delighted that Rivers kept her character true to her original, biblical presentation. She didn't try to remind us that Ruth was a girl like any of the rest of us, by pointing out her flaws or catching her in her weak moments. Instead she portrays her as a strong, faithful, trusting woman whose faith in God matures as she makes her new life with her mother-in-law after her husband dies. Rivers understanding and research of biblical culture and customs more fully explains the impact of Ruth leaving her family to move back to Naomi's home town, this enlightenment brings even more meaning to a story I assumed I already completely grasped.
Rivers also adds a great deal of humor in her character's dialog and actions. She gives the reader a great visua,l which is especially important when we already know the basic outline and outcome of the story.
I fully recommend this book to anyone who has read the story of Ruth and Boaz a hundred times and still finds themselves thinking about the details we might never know the full truth of.

The faithfulness of Ruth

Francine Rivers continues her excellent Lineage of Grace series with the story of Ruth. She follows the familiar narrative in the Bible as Ruth's husband and father-in-law die and she accompanies her mother-in-law Naomi back to her native Bethlehem. Throughout the book we see Ruth's courage and the faith she had adopted during her marriage to Naomi's son. She never stops believing that God will guide her to a better life and does not give in to the temptation of the false gods which surround her. Rivers has a way of remaining true to the Bible and yet fleshing out the stories so that they remain vivid in the reader's mind.

This is an anthology of 28 essays in which "Generation X" ("twentysomething") women explore their concepts of feminism. Within the essays are various stories of how these young women awakened to the realization of sexism, racism, or classism through personal experience. While some of the women talk of surviving anorexia, fat oppression, rape, multiple abortions, AIDS, physical disabilities, and sexism in the workplace, others tell of coming to terms with their own sexuality and integrating cultural, ethnic, and family traditions with feminism. The importance of inclusion in 1990s feminism is noted in several essays and is highlighted in those written by African Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. While most of the essays are interesting, enlightening, and offer encouragement for the future, others exude immaturity and youthful rebellion that are less encouraging.?Jeris Cassel, Rutgers Univ. a good read for feminists and non-feminists alike

But you must be interested in women or social politics . . .
Even if you think you know what feminism is all about, one of this book's essays should give you a new perspective. It consists of collections of essays from the many different women that call themselves feminists. From lesbians, straight women, bisexuals, african-americans and caucasians, aerobics instructors to full-time writers . . . there is a lot of variety. One section made me cry and I can't forget what I read in there. Another section made me understand a feminist perspective that I had never understood before. If you are a feminist, some of this book may be self-affirming. If you are not yet a feminist, maybe you will learn that you can be one without losing any of your ideals. There is room for everyone in this book.

Fresh voices for feminism!

Every Feminist knows one of the biggest internal and external criticisms of the movement: it is too exclusive. Too white, too middle-to-upper-class, too limited to past decades when Feminism was "needed". In short, the argument runs something like this: if Feminism is not indeed dead, it is too exclusive to attract most people.
Listen Up blows this criticism away with its wide range of voices coming from its essays written by all different types of people. In fact, the only thing that all the writers have in common is that they all call themselves a Feminist. They also call themselves everything from white, black, Asian, Hispanic, Indian, Christian, Jewish, Atheist, single, married, straight, lesbian, pro-life, pro-choice, mother, daughter, and much more. All of these descriptions come together to form one anthology that shows that no one has to subscribe to a majority's opinion of what Feminism entails in order to be a Feminist.
Most of the authors in this collection of essays are unknown, but they are all budding Feminists, and they all belong to the "Baby Boom" generation, those who are reshaping and redefining Feminist, proving that it is anything but dead. The authors are a funky collection of brilliant and diverse individuals, and each essay gives an important insight to modern Feminism. This unique book can be read in chronological order, or by picking and choosing the ones that appeal to you the most from its helpful table of contents, which gives an intriguing quote from each of the essays.
Read this book yourself, because it will inspire and motivate your Feminist views and actions. And then give it to a skeptic of Feminism, anyone who claims it is too narrow-minded and exclusive. Feminism is not dead just becuase the war was fought decades ago; rather, it is a war that needs to be continually fought until true equality is reached. As Ellen Neuborne writes in Listen Up in her essay "Imagine My Surprise","It is a dangerous thing to assume that just because we were raised in a feminist era, we are safe. We are not." And as JeeYeun Lee writes in her essay "Beyond Bean Counting", "Women of color do not struggle in feminist movements simply to add cultural diversity." These are just two of the many writers in Listen Up who assert the truth about Feminism: that every woman needs it, that every person should fight for true equality in issues of gender, race, and orientation. Listen Up is a fresh collection of voices by writers that will keep Feminism alive and well during their own generation, and spread the enthusiasm to those to come.

Inspiring.

I recieved this book as a gift when it first came out and still refer to it. Although I have since read many other feminist books, this text was one of the first to publically acknowllege that third wave feminists (including myself) necessarily have some differing ideas--which need to be listened to for the movement's ongoing relevancy.

Nommy Lamm's essay on intersecting disability identity with feminism really spoke to my own experiences. I have discovered that even some feminist colleagues will look down on me after realizing that I am a person with a disability. Alternately, some people with disabilities are not interested in a feminist critique of the state and thus do not consider themselves part of this social movement.

However important the disability rights movement of the 1970's---overemphasis on their acchievements ignores the perspective our generation has precisely as a result of growing up with non-discrimination laws AND lingering discrimination. At the same time, I do have privllege because my own disabilities are generally hidden---and I can 'pass' for the so-called normal person.

Indispensible and thought provoking essays from various backgrounds show how women do feminism gen-x style. A definite solace to those of us remaining unconvinced of the Spice Girl's "Girl Power" mantra.

Good book for techies.

I will recommend this book to any techies who are interested to understand how to successfully sell their tech or apps. It provides good tips on how to avoid some mistakes made by startups and some advice on how to minimize your opportunity costs, through various interesting analogies in every chapter.

Being a Computer Science student, this book is particularly helpful for many of my projects as I will treat my team as if I was really running a business; how to delegate tasks to people, how timing is of upmost importance etc.. Even if you are not an inspiring technopreneur, this book gives good tips on about just any business.

Although the shape of the book is odd and it doesn't fit into my bookshelf, I suppose that shouldn't be a limiting factor. 5 Stars for the win, Alex Cowan!

Alex Cowan's Starting A Tech Business is the most straightforward guide to building a sustainable technology company.

After reading Steve Blanks' Four Steps to the Epiphany and his follow up book with Bob Dorf The Startup Owner's Manual I felt overwhelmed by the breadth of material covered and battled staying focused on developing a product versus completing each aspect of Customer Development and Validation.

Like Eric Ries' Lean Startup, Cowan clearly presents the value of Customer Development through the lens of a Lean approach, but Cowan quickly diverges with rich case studies, clear decision making processes and takeaways. Further benefiting the efficiency and digestibility of Starting A Tech Business are clean page layouts with well-organized information that distill the various philosophies of Lean Startup, Customer Development, Agile and Design Thinking into a practical and complementary approach for entrepreneurs.

Starting A Tech Business is an excellent resource for new and season entrepreneurs who want to efficiently take their ideas from initial testing all the way to scaling a business.

"Starting a Tech Business" does a great job of describing all of the important details required to master startups from a Lean perspective. It also includes practical chapters that you won't find in other Lean Startup books. I found the "Team" chapter particularly interesting and in line with my own experiences. If you're starting a startup, you should definitely add this book to your reading list.

25 x 2 Garden Designs in Lovely Detail – printed one side of the page

The designs are whimsical with gates, fountains, birdhouses, animals, fairy houses, and even a young girl on a swing. There are all sorts of elements which bring me right into the garden setting while I am coloring in the book. Having a wide variety of green pens/markers/pencils will make coloring in this book even more fun.

The designs are detailed and a few have intricate and rather small areas to color. The projects will be fun and take some time to finish so there is a great value here. There are 25 designs but the publisher has included two of each design for a total of 50 coloring pages. I have to decide whether I will color the designs two ways or share the book with my husband and see how differently we color the same designs.

While you can have access to .PDFs when you purchase this book, my review is based on the book as it is received from Amazon. That way you will know what the pages look like and how they accept color. I like that the publisher provides the digital version as well so you can choose the paper you wish to use and/or to color the pictures as many times as you choose.

This is what I found while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium:

25 x 2 Detailed Garden inspired designs

Designs are printed on one side of the page

Paper is typical of CreateSpace: white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforated. The back of the page is printed black which is something I am find typical of Jade Summer coloring books.

The designs do not merge into the binding. There is a heavy framing line at the outer edges of the design to give the project a more finished look, especially for framing.

Glue Binding (there is room to cut the pages out if you choose to do so.)

Though you cannot see the bleed-through easily due to the back of the page being printed in black, I recommend the use of a blotter page when working in this book. I use a page of card stock or several sheets of heavyweight paper under my working page. It keeps seeping ink and marring dents from ruining the pages below.

Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page quickly.

Water-based markers bleed through in spots.

Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows on back of the page. India ink can bleed through if you apply heavily or multiple coats.

Coloring Pencils work well with this paper. I found that I could layers the same color for deeper pigment or multiple colors and I could blend easily using a blending stick. I tested both oil and wax based pencils. I also found that hard lead pencils leave dents through the paper.

Beautiful Scenes to Step Into With Color

Being someone who loves the outdoors and gardens in general I find this book to be like stepping into a splendid place to get lost in coloring The drawings have plenty of small detail to give me a challenge and I plan to complete and frame some of them for gifts. With so many lovely gardens to choose from in this book, I will be busy for a very long time.
P.S. If you are printing the digital version I found a wonderful paper that works great with my HP Inkjet and jel pens Neenah Exact Index Card Stock, 8.5 x 11 Inch, 90 lb, White, 250 Sheets (40311) Happy coloring!

Lovely drawings. I love them all. The 25 scenes repeat later but I love coloring gardens and trees a lot, it makes me feel as though I am in a calm, verdant and serene place!
