This book saved Me

This book saved me. it actually gave tips for preparing for the exam. Definitions and real estate terms are included to help me pass the state exam. I was kind of disappointed when I found out that it didn't come with the practice disc. It also included a math review which is very helpful. It shows in detail, how to solve the equations. Two practice exams is included. It consist of the questions and the answers to them. After Studying this book for about two weeks. I was comfortable with the California State Exam.

Whimsy in science?

Lyall Watson is a renaissance man, and his vast and varied experiences, readings
and interests are easily on display in this and all his other books. Watson has an eye for whimsical and unusual events, for beautiful images whether natural
or manufactured, and a keen intution for the magic in the ordinary image, thought, and objects.

This book specifically addresses all those strange and unexplained events which our orthodox scientists (isn't that an oxymoron) reject as unproven,
untested, and unscientific. Watson who holds a PhD in some branch of the natural sciences sees the inifinite humor, compassion, and joy inherent in being
alive on this earth, and the strange inhabitants of it, whether it be Komodo dragons, human beings, or rivers. In his stories and anecdotes inanimate objects
come to life, water can be happy or sad, mammals can re-grow severed limbs, and teh existance of shells (with their forms often representing mathematical perfection)
can have hidden lives....

If for no other reason than to have whimsical, unusual, and interesting trivia to talk about at a dry and dull dinner table, this book is to be read and marvelled at...

Read it for the Cannibal article

I read and enjoyed this book years ago, and copied a chapter I have reread a number of times and shared with friends. In the chapter called The Essence of Balance, Watson describes a culture of cannibals living in Indonesian New Guinea. These Papuan Asmat people have (had, presumably) a system of headhunting that at first glance is repellent: eating your dead enemy's brains? But in delicate detail, one comes to potentially understand this system as infinitely more civilized (to start with, by resolving tribal tensions with a single death) than our supposedly superior ways of bombing, maiming, and starving hundreds or millions. This essay alone is worth the price of the book.

Flat-out Amazing.

Not only do you feel your brain cells stretch with reading this book, you actually come out of it feeling smarter. This is not something that can be said of most books! Watson does an amazing job of drawing seemingly unconnected threads together and showing us how they fit--from a marine operculum's relationship to an extinct species of Man on the Skeleton Coast, to the opening sentence of one of the most amazing and ultimately uplifting stories of cultural contact and population pressure: "Some of my best friends are cannibals." The book sits with you long after you've read it. Watson does amazing research and it shows.

Ty Colbert, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and director of the Center for Psychological Alternatives to Biopsychiatry. One of the most helpful books I've ever read

The gist of this book is a contrast between what the author terms 'the medical model' (which claims that mental illnesses are biologically caused) and the 'emotional pain model' (which states that the causes of mental illnesses are to be found in emotional trauma and pain).
The first part of the book is a sound and detailed critique and repudiation of 'the medical model', while the rest of the book is devoted to an in-depth exposition of the 'emotional pain model'.
To me, it is really no great mystery why the psychiatric profession and society at large have chosen to believe that all mental illnesses are organic illnesses (i..e biologically caused), for that gives the simple and comforting illusion that these otherwise so perplexing and uncontrollable diseases have been understood and can be managed.
It's just another case of the apparently basic abhorrence of the human mind for uncertainty and lack of control.
Nevertheless, despite the (for so many) great and obvious appeal of the biological model, I think it is high time that we as individuals and as a society move away from it towards a sounder understanding of the causes of mental illness.
For the biological model IS an illusion, make no mistake about that! (as the author does an excellent job of demonstrating in the first part of the book).
While I do not believe that the emotional pain model can fully account for all mental disorders, I definitely think it is a huge step in the right direction.
As someone who has carried the label of 'chronic schizophrenic' for nearly ten years now, this book has been a real eye-opener for me, and has resulted in a much broader and more sensible understanding of the sources of my troubles than biopsychiatry can offer.
Highly recommended!

A clear critique of biopsychiatry

This book is very easy to read. It boils things down, but it is not simplistic. It incisively refutes the theoretical underpinnings of biopsychiatry, including the flawed and mis-stated studies which purport to show that "mental illness" is inherited, the simplistic and virtually unsupported chemical imbalance theories of "mental illness," and the myths and hype surrounding psychiatric drugs.
Colbert's own view of the causes and cures of "mental illness" is just one way of stating a general truth, but it zeroes in on the reality of what "mental illness" and its "cures" are all about. As he states at pages 116 and 117:
"1. We all hurt each other at times, both unintentionally and intentionally.
2.We all need others to heal those hurts.
3. We all deny to some extent how we hurt others, and how we need others to heal our hurts.
People create exotic theories about the causes of strange behavior and emotional disorders, because it's too uncomfortaable to admit our basic human need for each other, and because we don't like to face the fact that we can hurt and be hurt by our fellow humans....Let's not hide any longer behind our fancy theories and our often abusive cures. Let's learn what it takes to attend to and heal wounded hearts."
This may sound like wishful thinking, but Colbert makes plain that the real wishful thinking is done by biopshciatry, an edifice of mutually supporting empirical and logical errors, held together mainly by its adherents' own determination to be convinced of thier own preconceptions.
I have read twenty-five books on this subject, most more technical than this one. The beauty of this book is that it accurately conveys the essence of a technical subject without itself being technical.

Truly and Wholly Healing

Noticing than when he paid attention to the emotional pain that existed alongside a client's behaviour, the client's symptoms of paranoia disappeared, psychologist Ty Colbert realised that her behaviour was not "dysfunctional" but functioning quite effectively to protect her inner woundedness.
This contrasted strongly with proponents of the biopsychiatry who present models of supposed biological-defect or chemical-imbalance. They sound quite convincing until Dr Colbert looked deeper into the actual research and found the claims to be very weak indeed. Meanwhile, the list of so-called "mental disorders" keeps increasing as does the medication of them. In this model, pain is denied, symptoms surface, but are seen as the product of a defect and are suppressed medically.
Over 15 years he developed the "Emotional Pain Model" detailed in Broken Brains or Wounded Hearts - What Causes Mental Illness (Kevco, 1999). It represents a desire to take the mystery out of mental illness and provide a clear path for the future, allowing the reader to develop a proper understanding of any and all emotionally troubling conditions.
Dr Colbert proposes a three-phase model for eliminating emotional disorders and developing emotionally healthy children: People are taught to ientify feelings and resolve conflicts; Symptoms are seen as indicators of an overload of emotional pain; Non-medical, non-abusive healing environments are developed.
This book is an important contribution, validating an approach to therapy that is truly and wholly healing. a one-act play concerning a practical joke

This one-act play was first performed in London, 1899 at the St. James Theatre. It was revived in 1902 where it ran over 100 performances.

Six gentlemen are spending the night at a hotel in a small country town. At the beginning of the play, the men have just heard a story about a supposed ghost inhabiting the hotel. One of the travelers loves theatricals, and when a few of the others are out of the room, he wagers that he can scare someone if he dresses up as the ghost.

The stage directions are quite thorough. You know exactly where each actor is move, sit and stand, and what he is to do. There are two endings to the play, in case "the above tragic termination would be too serious."

Medieval England provides the background for Coulter's latest spirited romance, a tale that pits willful young heiress Hastings of Trent against her new husband, doughty warrior Severin of Langthorne. The union has been decreed by Hastings's dying father, the Earl of Oxborough, to save her?and the castle and estate?from the evil depredations of Richard de Luci. As de Luci's forces advance on the castle, Severin consummates the marriage with practical dispatch. He explains away his harsh commands and brutal deflowering expedient behavior (if Hastings is no longer a virgin, de Luci cannot claim her as a bride), but Hastings feels she has been raped. Seeking counsel from several older women, she is told she must change her attitude and try to please her husband. She takes their advice and, to her surprise, Severin's behavior toward her changes dramatically. Then, just as the relationship begins to grow, beautiful Lady Marjorie, Severin's long-lost first love, arrives at the castle, perhaps, Hastings fears, to try to win Severin back. Compounding her worries is her discovery that the earl had maintained a mysterious second household at Rosehaven, a keep on the English coast. After an angry confrontation with Severin about Marjorie, Hastings sets out alone to find Rosehaven. The secret of the secluded castle is part of the requisite happy ending, but Coulter's (The Valentine Legacy) portrayal of an abusive husband as a romantic hero may leave some readers less than pleased. Although it is presented in the context of the era, her suggestion that a woman can, by changing her behavior, alter the pattern of abuse in a relationship is frightening. To her usual successful mix of romance, humor, and spicy sex talk (think Wife of Bath with a pinch of dominatrix), the author of the Legacy trilogy (The Valentine Legacy, 1995, etc.) adds a rather substantial leavening of Disney-esque animal characters to a story set in 1277 England. They include Gilbert the castle goat, who gives milk and eats gauntlets; Edgar the Wolfhound (to whom Severin of Langthorne ties Hastings, his young wife, when he wants to humiliate her); Alfred, the huge housecat and familiar of Hastings's teacher, a recluse called the ``Healer'' who hates all men until she's smitten with Severin's man Gwent (``that lack-witted oxhead''); and Trist, the cute marten who cuddles beneath Severin's tunic. Besides comic relief, Trist's loving presence signifies to Hastings that the fierce-looking stranger to whom she's been betrothed isn't the scary warrior she first imagines. Severin has just returned from the Crusades to find his brother dead, his mother mad, and his estate penniless. With the blessing of King Edward, he has come to Oxborough Castle in East Anglia to wed Hastings, an heiress. He wants a sweet submissive wife who will give him an heir and leave him alone. Instead, he finds a strong-willed young woman well versed in self-preservation and herbal healing. (Borla root in ale makes a ``manhood'' flaccid; mugwort and primrose heal a swollen nose.) Beneath the usual conventions of the genre and some spirited good humor is Coulter's standard grim underpinning of domestic violence and marital rape--though this time, while not dispensing with them, she does suggest that men are not as deadly as they seem, especially if skillfully handled. Standard bawdy fare, Coulter-style, though the violence may offend the growing number of romance readers who are dissatisfied with rape in any form. Great Medival Read!!

Perhaps those that criticize this book do so not understanding the difference between the sexes during the medieval period and later regency times. I am not as fond of earlier period books but Rosehaven is to me an exception. I loved Severin and Hastings and found their romance very intriging and interesting - certainly not in any ways boring. For a couple that was thrown together in an arranged marriage - they both certainly came together in the end in such a loving and compelling manner - for that period of time it was a true love story. Catherine Coulter is one of the few authors that seems to have great loves stories both in modern times and in the past. She wins again for me with Rosehaven!!

Wow, it really was that bad

I saw all the horrible reviews and thought to myself "it can't really be that bad." But it was. This book is in no way, shape, or form a romance and I can not believe a self respecting woman (who based on some of her other work, is a very talented writer) actually wrote this. I can not write a review of this with out mentioning the rape, no not coercion, actual forcible rape, and the so called hero was never repentant about it, in fact he seemed to be quite proud. If that wasn't bad enough the "hero" continuously degraded and humiliated the "heroine." I understand it's a historical and at the time it is set, it was seen as perfectly OK for a man to treat his wife this way, but this is fiction. The author didn't have to make it this way. Not all romances have to light and frothy, there can and should be conflict, but this was ridiculous. This book is a feminist's nightmare. After the heroine is abused physically and emotionally by her husband, she finally gets a backbone and decides to leave, but every other female character in the book get together to convince her that not only is all of this her fault, but also that she should correct it by initiating sex with this man. Reading this book was like watching a train wreck, you know its bad and you really don't want to see it, but you have to keep looking anyway. I made it to the end of this book because I kept hoping that somehow these characters would do something to truly redeem themselves (although some things are unforgivable). Instead all we got was a fake HEA, there was no change of heart, no understanding of things done wrong, no admittance of guilt or remorse, just a near death experience and an abrupt I Love You from both parties. I have never in my life seen a character less deserving of a happy ending that Severin. Unless you want to be upset and disappointed I would not recommend reading this book, at all, ever, because yes it really is THAT bad.

Disturbing

What worries me with books like this one, is what impact they have on young women reading them and is given the impression that this is love.
Severin is a clear cut psychopath. When he rapes Hasting, he tell her she forced him to do it and he finds him self considerate that he use some cream so he don't rip her totally open. Note, nothing is ever his fault, no matter how bad he treats her, the clear mark of a psychopath.
Regarding Hasting, well is that really love or Stockholm syndrome? Her ladies is naturally a product of their time and enablers for Severins abuse. Only one with lick of sense is the Healer. And the most charming creatures are Trist the marten and Severins mother.
The two second in command Gwent and , also seem to have way more sense and respect for women then their commanders Severin and Sir Richard. No idea why Gwent is described as lack witted. He seems to have a EQ mile above his master.
Some of the rewires criticize Hastings attempt to harm her husband and her rebellion against him. Personally I wished she bashed his brain in with a mace every second page.
