It comprises unpublished writings from the years before his death in 1957, together with simplified kata--sequences of movements--synthesized by Funakoshi from the traditional Okinawa Karate-do kata, for beginners.

Master Funakoshi begins by exploding some of the myths of Karate: "Karate-do is a noble martial art, and the reader can rest assured that those who take pride in breaking boards or smashing tiles, or who boast of being able to perform outlandish feats like stripping flesh or plucking out ribs, really know nothing about karate. They are playing around in the leaves and branches of a great tree, without the slightest concept of the trunk."

In his description of what Karate is, the Master describes the history of Karate--its origins in the ancient methods of unarmed combat in China, and its growth as a fighting method in Okinawa, a country where arms were banned in a succession of decrees from the Japanese mainland. In order to prevent it being subjected to control, or more importantly, to prevent the Japanese overlords from knowing and using the techniques, the practice of Karate was kept a secret. To preserve this secrecy, the habit persisted until very recent times of keeping no records. Master Funakoshi, however, recognized in this book and others the need to formulate the kata precisely, so as to establish a standard of true Okinawan Karate. The kata in this book are not traditional kata, but they serve to establish the correct habits of stance, thought and action, and to facilitate the eventual mastery of the true Karate-do kata. All these special kata are clearly explained and illustrated by photos.

Lastly, Master Funakoshi recalls stories of men who were living legends when he was a youth in Okinawa, men whose reputations overcame even the secrecy that clung to Karate until the middle of this century.

About the Author
GICHIN FUNAKOSHI is world famous as one of Karate's great masters. Born in Shuri, Okinawa Prefecture, in 1868, he studied Karate-do from childhood and organized the first public demonstrations.

He was trained in the Confucian classics and was a schoolteacher early in life. After training for decades under the foremost masters in Okinawa he was elected president of the Okinawa Association for the Spirit of Martial Arts.

He was chosen to demonstrate Karate at the First National Athletic Exhibition in Tokyo in 1922, which led to the introduction of the ancient martial art to the rest of Japan and subsequently to the rest of the world. Among his writings are Karate-do: My Way of Life, Karate-do Kyohan: The Master Text, and Karate Jutsu: The Original Teachings of Gichin Funakoshi.

Master Gichin Funakoshi died in April 1957.

If a instructor, assistant, student who is very deep into karate do and is searching for some history and foundation of karate do shotokan this is the first book you should have or give as a gift. This book is very detailed about master Funakoshi instruction and his master's, if you are getting this book may I suggest Funakoshi's other book karate do kyohon also. If karate do changes your life this book also helps in a deeper look into karate do and what it does to an individual.

Very interesting. This book describes Kata in the form of building body form and strength. It explains how to develop Ki (Chi) from the lower abdomen. (Dantian) By breathing and practicing the 10 No Kata, one can develop strength in fighting. Kata also develops a fighting form to remember so that one can master moves in combat. Without Kata, it would be hard to be a strong fighter and one will have hard time remembering and mastering fighting moves.

I have read many Funakoshi books... this book was was extremely interesting the Master talks about basics which are the foundation of every great Martial artist. I highly recommend this book for any martial Artists studying Karate..Funikoshi has a few other amazing books as well Karate d0 my way of life is truly a great book as well as the essence of Karate. this book is full of great examples and illustrations

Wonderful First Novel for the 5th Battalion E Company

Target of the Heart was an excellent first novel for the New series - the 5E (5th Battalion E Company). The romance between Danielle and Pete was most enjoyable. The interaction between these two was often humorous and very entertaining! The portrayal of the capabilities of the helicopter pilots was so very interesting. Mr. Buchman has written another fascinating and enjoyable novel. This book can be read as a stand alone story. It would be helpful if readers read the first novels of the Night Stalkers books to understand the missions of these capable military officers and to meet the men and women in the first novels as the people from the earlier books do make appearances through many of the books written for the Firehawks series, the 5E series, and the Delta series. I highly recommend this book to all readers!

You owe it to yoursefl to read these books!

After finishing each book in this series, I have barely let my kindle cool down before ordering another. These are well written books about incredible women and the men who love them. These are heroines to admire and respect and even emulate. I find myself hoping that women like these actually exist within our military and, if they do, I hope they find their happily ever afters...they certainly deserve them.

Although these books are stand alones, you should really read Emily Beale's story first. After that, the rest just fall into place.

This is the first review I have done and I want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I actually really like all of his books and can't wait for the next one to come out. I love strong characters and the fact that the women soldiers can hold their own in combat situations and excel. Wish I could find more authors that have similar themes. Love women in military stories.

Savage Continent explains why European culture is the way it is.

I very much appreciate the time and energy that was put into this book by the author, Keith Lowe. This book is so well written, methodically organized, and produce an easy read for me. His flow of material makes a smooth reading style allowing of increase comprehension of the topic. Every "Baby Boomer" should read this piece for it will provide much information on how and why European culture is today while traveling through the continent. This six year war was so devastating and impactful, its implications are still apparent today.

The work is divided into four parts which cover the war legacy, vengeance, ethnic cleansing, and civil war. For most Americans today this topic does not relate to anything remotely familiar to them. The American Civil War would be the closest, but nobody is around from this conflict as a witness and it is a more distant time. In Savage Continent it appears the aftermath associated with the Displaced Persons (DP) across Europe and especially the expulsions of Germans from neighboring countries between 1945-49 defies imagination. Basically, there was dehumanization across the entire continent during the war and considerably several years after.

From the safety of the 21st Century we tend to use value systems of today and imagine WW II as a single, unambiguous conflict between the Allies one one side and the Axis on the other. In our minds' eye the motives and allegiances for each are transparent. More like a epic battle between good and evil, but in reality the last portion of this book explains it was more complicated. Hidden within the main conflict were dozens of other more local wars, which in different flavors and motivations were in each country and each region.

I was recommended of this book by John Roth, a traveling acquaintance, when on a WW II Anniversary European tour last summer. This was my first exposure to the detention camps and views of the war I had not previous witnessed. Savage Continent should be read prior to your next trip to Europe to obtain empathy and compassion for what these peoples have been through.

A Grand Book

The Visual Guide to the Clone Wars (based on the new animated film), is a remarkable book. Those who are familiar with the film, will find the book very easy to follow, and a delightful look into the film that goes at your pace.

The art is taken from the film, and 'panels' are inserted (and even numbered) so readers can follow the plot scene by scene. It's almost like this is a sophisticated storyboard for Clone Wars that took on a life of its' own. With the book, various elements in the film can be explained on a visual level, and inside jokes like 1138 can be got by savvy fans. (Think THX 1138).

Unlike many visual guides, this one weighs in at 144 pages of pure digital animation joy. Watching the film, I appreciated it, but missed some of the subtle plot nuances. This time, I got them.

The back of the book says it well. "A plan is only as goos as those who see it through". Perhaps this is a reference to the Scorcerors Apprentice, "Finish What you Start".

Either way, the Clone Wars rocks.

A home run for one five year-old!

A new Star Wars convert, my five year old son received this as a gift for his birthday two months ago. Since then, it has rarely left his side, as he reads it constantly. Although the vocabulary is often over his head, the graphics, layout and textual narration are excellent, and continue to command his attention and stimulate his imagination. Note: the book is strictly limited to the Star Wars Clone Wars saga (and graphics/illustrations from the movie/tv series, not any of the 6 SW movies). A very well-done product.

AWESOME BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a huge fan of Star Wars and can't wait to see the movie The Clone Wars, so to get an idea of what it will be about I bought this book. It is awesome! It is jam packed with pictures and te,lls you every thing you need to know about the characters, battles, ships, everything!!! I think it is excellent buy.
