“Atmospheric and unputdownable.” –People
In bestselling Tana French’s newest “tour de force,”* being on the Murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she’s there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she’s getting close to the breaking point.

Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers’ quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalogue-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner. There’s nothing unusual about her—except that Antoinette’s seen her somewhere before.

And that her death won’t stay in its neat by-numbers box. Other detectives are trying to push Antoinette and Steve into arresting Aislinn’s boyfriend, fast. There’s a shadowy figure at the end of Antoinette's road. Aislinn's friend is hinting that she knew Aislinn was in danger. And everything they find out about Aislinn takes her further from the glossy, passive doll she seemed to be.

Antoinette knows the harassment has turned her paranoid, but she can’t tell just how far gone she is. Is this case another step in the campaign to force her off the squad, or are there darker currents flowing beneath its polished surface?

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of October 2016: Detectives Steve Moran and Antoinette Conway are now partners on the Murder Squad. They’ve been handed a case that at first looks like every other low-energy domestic they’ve ever been given--but during a routine interview, the murdered woman’s friend drops a clue that leads them to suspect this could be bigger than they had imagined. Much bigger. Contentious squad room politics add to their frustration as the detectives are led in conflicting directions by red herrings, dead ends, and warped perceptions. The Trespasser kept me happily discombobulated, guessing at an ending that I didn’t see coming. And that is what makes Tana French one of the best thriller writers out there. --Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review

“There's nothing standard about French's approach to crime fiction, which plays the form much like a jazz musician improvising on a standard. Even when the outlines of the mystery seem familiar…she finds a way to get at enriching themes and powerful emotional truths in fresh and surprising ways.”

A haunting, beautiful masterpiece.
By Ursula J
The worst part of any Tana French novel, for me, is finishing and coming to the sad realization that it will be another couple years before I am able to experience another novel that leaves the same impression on me. In fact, if anyone has any recommendations as to authors who you feel are reminiscent of French's style of writing, pass them on! I have yet to come across one.
The novel is about partners Antoinette and Stephen who are handed a case that appears easy enough to solve - a lover's tiff gone wrong. While that is the basis of the novel, there are actually several different storylines and so many moving parts to this story that you wonder how it will all weave together. French is particularly adept at writing a story that, while having many twists and turns, never comes at you like a punch in the gut. In fact, as developments occur in the novel, a part of you is left wondering how she managed to pull the wool over your eye enough that it was still a surprise, yet not such a surprise that you had to reread the novel to look for clues as to how you missed it. For this reason, there is no other author in my arsenal that I feel even comes close to her skill level as an author.
Another reason that Tana French is so gifted is because she is always able to create the most complex characters. Her characters are so raw, so deep, that you feel as if you know them. You experience every shift in their case with them; you quicken your breath when they quicken theirs; you need a moment to step away from the novel when things don’t go as planned. You want to reach through the book and tell your characters, BE CAREFUL! when you feel they’re taking unnecessary risks. French is an absolute genius at creating these real life characters whose presence in your life becomes bigger than just fiction.
I have to mention that there is a scene towards the end of the book that I read with a quickening breath and my nerves felt fried. It was as if I was there myself and the suspense leading up to the moment absolutely took my breath away. I’ve only ever experienced such emotions during real life cases I was following on the telly, or documentaries, etc.
Please do yourself a favor and read all of Tana French’s books, if you have not already. Don’t start with this one but begin with her first and then continue. The reason being is because while all of them are amazing, her writing style truly develops as she writes and therefore each one becomes better than the last.
I tried to read this book as slowly as I could, to make it last as long as I could, but I never stood a chance. I would like to thank Tana French for the joy of being able to experience yet another novel that left me speechless.

Not What I Was Hoping For
By V. Elias
I love Tana French's writing. It doesn't get much better. You have to immerse yourself into her books to understand them, the writing is dense and thick, every word matters. It pains me to say I didn't care for this book. It plodded along for me. I have no problem with a complicated lead character, in this case, Antionette. She was grumpy(with reason) and not a pleasant person. Okay, no big deal. I don't know, it just didn't work on some level. The conversations all seemed too long, too involved, there was little time in the story outside of the squad room. Kind of like a one setting play. With that component, it was tedious at times. Every previous book by this author has been exceptional, with ethereal qualities you just don't get in most literature today. I was so looking forward to this book. Hoping for a better installment in the Dublin Murder Squad next time.

because I expect good things. The Trespasser did not disappoint me
By Penelope Schmitt
French is on my short list of writers whose novels I pre-order, because I expect good things. The Trespasser did not disappoint me. It was not as heart rending as Faithful Place, nor as hair-raising as Broken Harbor, but it was another excellent foray into French's great gift for creating difficult narrators, who may act as their own worst enemies, but whom we can't help rooting for and hoping for all the way, even when what we root for is comeuppance. Detective Antoinette Conway is an outsider with an outsize attitude--dark skinned, with an Irish mother and an unknown foreigner for an absconded father. As a woman working in a man's world, she assumes every man's hand is against her, and her demeanor is accordingly and unwaveringly hostile. This blind spot as big as Gibralter is of course going to make trouble for her, and does. The case she and her more personable partner, Steve Moran, must solve appears to be a common enough domestic argument gone horribly wrong. But both detectives soon get a feeling that it is not as open and shut as it seems. Really, to say much more would be to give far too much away. The pleasure and suspense of the story is in the slow discovery of the victim's character and personality, her history, the intense, tense and psychologically draining trip-wire internal politics of the detective squad and the interview room, and a long, slow-unfolding denouement that has the feeling of deep tragedy and human folly about it. The Trespasser of the title is a joker in the pack who unwittingly brings illumination and insight with him. Good show!
