A Truly Rare Gift!

For several years now I have encouraged Dr. Lewis to publish this wonderful gift! Ever since discovering Robert Kegan's theory of adult development almost 20 years ago, I have relied on it as a cornerstone for my research in leader development. More importantly, Kegan's ideas have forever altered how I understand myself, others and the world we live in. Unfortunately, as much as I admire Kegan's work, his foundational books ("The Evolving Self" and "In Over Our Heads") are not an easy read, nor is his approach to development a simple one. Finally, Professor Lewis -- who, in my opinion just might understand Kegan's theory as deeply as Kegan himself -- has crafted a highly readable (indeed inspirational) summary of this powerful theory. Prior to publishing it electronically, I have shared earlier drafts of "The Discerning Heart" with colleagues and friends. Without exception, they have raved about it. Now you will too!

A more accessible interpretation of a powerful theory

This little Kindle ebook provides a friendly and refreshing interpretation of Kegan's subject-object theory.Though I was already familiar with the topic before reading Lewis' text, this book has increased my understanding and appreciation for the depth, complexity, and richness of Kegan's powerful, but highly complex, conceptualization of adult development. I read it in one sitting and have since recommended it to others. Perhaps its greatest benefit lies there, in making the theory more accessible to those unfamiliar with it. Thank you Dr. Lewis!

We need this book in print form

I'm not a psychologist, but, like most curious laypersons, I love trying to figure out how the mind works. My latest insight into this fascinating topic has come via a slender volume entitled The Discerning Heart: The Developmental Psychology of Robert Kegan by Dr. Philip M. Lewis. This book is a real eye-opener, in terms of explaining Kegan's five-stage theory of personality development.
While most personality theories focus on the earlier periods of life (childhood, adolescence, and perhaps early adulthood), Kegan's theory, which is based on the Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget's view of identity development, also posits increasingly sophisticated adult stages of development that "reflect progressively more complicated perspective-taking capacities" (p. 22).
So, if I understand the theory correctly, the "impulsive" stage-one child is "embedded in" or "subject to" his impulses. The "imperial" stage-two individual, on the other hand, is capable of viewing his immediate desires from a broader perspective, making them an "object" of consideration rather than being "subject" to them.
According to this theory, what is "subject" at any particular stage becomes "object" in the subsequent stage. Thus, the "subject" of the "interpersonal" stage-three person, which includes sharing mutual and societal ideals, becomes the "object" of the "institutional" stage-four person, who has developed his or her own perspective on relationships and social values. The rare "interindividual" stage-five individual gets past the ego, becoming in some sense part of a universal self.
In describing Kegan's theory, Lewis adopts an informal style. Despite the complexity of the subject, Lewis eschews a dry theoretical approach, opting instead for a conversational tone and numerous anecdotal illustrations. The result is an engaging, readable text that fulfills Lewis's purpose; namely, to provide the general reader with the theoretical framework to recognize one's own and others' developmental stages.
This jewel of a book, now available on Kindle, needs to be published in print form, so that more people can avail themselves of a tool that enhances discernment and compassion.
