Gr 7 Up—Opportunity High School takes pride in leading its students to greatness. After all, its motto is We Shape the Future. However, not all students agree. Outcast Tyler Browne has returned with a vengeance and with his own motto: "I will make sure you remember me." And so begin 54 minutes of hell on earth for students and staff as Tyler holds his audience captive inside a locked auditorium, killing whomever he pleases and offering heartless grace to others. Told from four student perspectives, each with their own frayed relationship to "the shooter," this compelling tale echoes current events. The full-cast narration includes top-of-their-game performances from Nick Podehl, Amy McFadden, Kate Rudd, Whitney Dykhouse, Lauren Ezzo, and Scott Merriman. VERDICT A gripping tale from start to finish. ["With a thrilling narrative, topical subject matter, and diverse characters, this is a first purchase for libraries serving teens": SLJ 11/15 review of the Sourcebooks Fire book.]—Cheryl Preisendorfer, Twinsburg City Schools, OH
Review
"This Is Where It Ends is simultaneously heart pounding and heart wrenching. Every word hits frighteningly close to home and is tragically too familiar. This book will leave you asking questions that we as a society should have answered a long time ago."-Julie Murphy, #1 New York Times bestselling author of DUMPLIN'
"Stunning, diverse, and unforgettable, This Is Where It Ends is a book everyone should read to better understand each other and the world around us."- Robin Talley, author of LIES WE TELL OURSELVES
"As long as there are Newtowns and Columbines there will be a desperate need for gripping, well-written, and poignant novels like this one. We are the most gun-violent country in the world, and yet little has been done to stop these rampage killings. Many people have become numb to the news that yet another child, or family, or congregant, has been murdered. Hopefully a book like This Is Where It Ends will make the problem more real to a generation that still has the time, energy, and willpower to do something about it."- Todd Strasser, award-winning author of GIVE A BOY A GUN and FALLOUT
"Entirely gripping and fast-paced."-Lucy Christopher, award-winning author of STOLEN
"[A] compelling story of terror, betrayal, and heroism... This brutal, emotionally charged novel will grip readers and leave them brokenhearted." - Kirkus
"Love, loyalty, bravery, and loss meld into a chaotic, heart-wrenching mlange of issues that unite some and divide others. A highly diverse cast of characters, paired with vivid imagery and close attention to detail, set the stage for an engrossing, unrelenting tale." - Publishers Weekly
"With narration firmly rooted in the moment and smooth transitions in and out of flashbacks, each first-person account reveals an intricate web of betrayal and pain that connects the four to Tyler and the horror he has unleashed." - The Horn Book Magazine
"A gritty, emotional, and suspenseful read and although fictionalized, it reflects on a problematic and harrowing issue across the nation." - Buzzfeed
"Marieke Nijkamp's brutal, powerful fictional account of a school shooting is important in its timeliness." - Bustle.com
"A compelling, brutal story of an unfortunately all-too familiar situation: a school shooting. Nijkamp portrays the events thoughtfully, recounting fifty-four intense minutes of bravery, love, and loss." - BookRiot
"The core message and potential to open thoughtful discussion make this a solid choice for teen readers." - VOYA Magazine
"Harrowing first-person narrations reveal the way characters try to understand what is happening, where they are in relation to the emergency, and what they can do to save those they love... readable, gripping, and well balanced." - The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"You'll finish this book in a single evening, guaranteed." - Paste Magazine
"Nijkamp's emotional, powerful debut fictionalizes an all-too-frequent occurrence in today's world. Her strong storytelling pulls readers into a school shooting, leaving them amongst the gunman's victims in Opportunity High's auditorium." - RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars

Not my cup of tea...
By A L Fraz
To be honest, I have mixed feelings about this book. I did read it quickly, because I wanted to know what happened. However, parts of the story were gripping and horrific, while others were mediocre and not believable. Most of the characters (like the shooter) were one dimensional and at times it was hard to tell them apart, let alone connect with them. I will say that I did like how the characters were all connected to each other (friends, family, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc.) I also liked the diversity of the characters (Hispanic, Disabled, Gay, etc.) Although I have never experienced a school shooting, things the characters did/said seemed a little ridiculous and unrealistic to me. Overall, This is Where it Ends was not my cup of tea, but a lot of other reviewers found it captivating, so don't let my review discourage you from picking up a copy.

This is such a brilliant way to open the book
By stephsco
This book is addictively readable, and yet also hard to read given this is about a school shooting live and in progress. At times, I questioned whether the book was too violent, but seconds later would remind myself of the countless actual school shootings happening in the United States. These mass killings, sprees, and "lone gunmen" have become so commonplace we, the public, are almost irritated when another one surfaces. AGAIN? This book brought the conversation back down to the individuals affected by such a senseless tragedy, and even explores, with a deft hand, that very idea of whether these tragedies are senseless, or if there is some sense in there, though convoluted and misguided.
This is Where it Ends begins with a shot--the starter gun out on the school's track. This is such a brilliant way to open the book, with a student who is not inside the school when the shooting happens. The narration switches from four points of view, each with connections to the shooter and to each other. The entire story takes place over an hour of time, and it's gripping. I read this in 3 sittings--it would have been 1 sitting if not for the day job and life's responsibilities.
As for the "too violent" thought that occasionally surfaced while reading, I want to stress this book is written very age-appropriate to teens. It is violent, but so are school shootings which our younger generation deals with. Gore is not glorified, but instead the humanity and emotion and reality of situations like this. Like how previous generations practiced air raid drills, the current younger gen practices lock-down procedures. It's a reality that a shooting could happen to anyone. No wholesome small town is safe. I still vividly remember Columbine unfolding on the news and being scared that could happen in my town. (In fact, my hometown just this week was the site of a killing spree that made national news, though not in a school.) What this book highlights throughout is hope, determination, and a will to live. That's especially important in a book like this. The characters each struggle in their own ways, but all of them demonstrate hope and bravery.

Dark and realistic. Teens will like it.
By Britt Kay
I land clearly in the middle of this one. People seem to either love it or hate it and I found it to be okay.
Young people might find it more exciting and be less caught up in the non realistic moments.
I enjoyed the alternating points of view, but I think a couple were unnecessary and just distracting. Never showing us what Tyler is thinking keeps the mystery going and I think that was a good call.
It's definitely dark, very dark and violent, this isn't a book about healing or happiness, but maybe that is some of the realism that IS in the book.
