I (Still) Believe: Leading Bible Scholars Share Their Stories of Faith and ScholarshipFrom HarperCollins Christian Pub.

I (Still) Believe explores the all-important question of whether serious academic study of the Bible is threatening to one’s faith. Far from it—faith enhances study of the Bible and, reciprocally, such study enriches a person’s faith. With this in mind, this book asks prominent Bible teachers and scholars to tell their story reflecting on their own experiences at the intersection of faith and serious academic study of the Bible.

While the essays of this book will provide some apology for academic study of the Bible as an important discipline, the essays engage with this question in ways that are uncontrived. They present real stories, with all the complexities and struggles they may hold. To this end, the contributors do two things: (a) reflect on their lives as someone who teaches and researches the Bible, providing something of a story outlining their journey of life and faith, and their self-understanding as a biblical theologian; and (b) provide focused reflections on how faith has made a difference, how it has changed, and what challenges have arisen, remained, and are unresolved, all with a view toward the future and engaging the book’s main question.

Review
"This book needed to be written on behalf of all those who live in the pressing, sometimes unbearable tension of a life of scholarly pursuit and personal faith. These stellar biblical scholars show us that their lasting legacy may not be simply their published works, but how they modeled navigating the tension with respect and authenticity, and thus the transformation of their faith rather than loss of it."
- Peter Enns, Abram S. Clemens Professor of Biblical Studies, Eastern University

"A very important and salutary book for all who struggle holding the critical study of Scripture and a commitment to the apostolic faith together. These 'heavy hitters' in biblical studies, share how faith has been a driving force in their scholarship and how their scholarship has been formative for their faith and practice."
- David A. deSilva, Trustees' Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Greek, Ashland Theological Seminary

"Just as understanding a biblical text's background helps us understand why the text addresses what it does, I (Still) Believe provides special insight into the experiences and trends that have shaped many of today's senior biblical interpreters."
- Craig S. Keener, F. M. and Ada Thompson Professor of Biblical Studies, Asbury Theological Seminary

Evangelical Criticism and the Help of History
By Nicholas Quient
I read this work in a single day. A penetrating, terrifying, and ultimately bittersweet anthology from 18 Christian scholars who suffered, laughed, and drifted their way throughout their vocations and their lives. If anyone is having trouble with certain Christian doctrines (inerrancy, for example), you are in good company: these scholars had to think through these issues too. Chapters most worth your read (all of them are!) belong to John Goldingay (he is my priest), Donald Hagner (he's a mentor), Gordon Fee, Phyllis Trible, Scot McKnight, and James D.G. Dunn.

In the words of Don Hagner, "for me, biblical scholarship is a form of service to God." (p.116).

This little work is well worth your time. Settle down with a mug of something, open this book, and think long and hard about those who have gone through this long before you have. History is needed in scholarship and in Christian thoughts, and this work exemplifies it. Well done, Drs. Byron and Lohr, and all who contributed to this work.

This is a fantastic book. It may not be of great interest ...
By Paul V Sorrentino
This is a fantastic book. It may not be of great interest to the average layperson but anyone who has taken a religion course in college or gone to seminary will find it of great interest. The 18 scholars represent much of the Christian spectrum. Each tells his or her own story of how their scholarship and faith have developed over the years. A fascinating read.

More lifestory than wrestling with God.
By NMHighPlains
I was disappointed in the book. It read like "Well, I grew up here and went here for school and taught here and then..." and there wasn't as much wrestling with the really hard issues as I expected. When they did wrestle with them, the answers seemed pretty shallow, in the vein of "we won't understand it all here." Granted, about 1/2 way thru, I started skimming and flipping but when that happens, it's a sure sign that a book's not grabbing me. Maybe it'll grab you.
