A New Lease of Life for Marxist Analysis

Dr. Donald Donham's extremely readable account and analysis of what could easily have been a most boring subject matter is a must read. Not only for those Marxists tired of orthodoxy of all types, but also for those non-Marxists who never tire of bashing Marxists. Set amongst the Maale people of Ethiopia, this book takles a seemingly simple question that has been the bane of materialist analysis for as long as it has been in existence. The question itself is posed in the following way: Is the table top existing because of the four legs that hold it up? Or, is it equally reasonable to say that the four legs are "legs" only because the table top meaningfully allows them to be so. Else they would merely be four pieces of wood, and that too skewed since it is the top that makes then perfectly vertical!
The book deals with the question of how the Maale organize their labor and brings together liberal economics and Marxist anthropological theory together in a positive manner. It shows how the first set of theories have limitations that do not allow them to solve certain Maale "paradoxes." On the other hand the latter set of theories need to be reshaped in the light of ethnographic data from Third World countries and peoples such as the Maale.
A superb, humanistic and many times humorous book. Always with both feet firmly planted on the ground, the author also shows how Marxism necessarily must participate in the drama that is life. Thus, he successfully attempts to integrate the literary genres of Comedy, Tragedy, Irony and Romance into his clearly argued Marxist analysis. I will be using this book in my graduate level seminar on Social Theory.

Briliant, but probably not for everyone

What is love?
What does it mean to love?
And to be loved?

What is family?
What does no longer having family mean?
What if you never had the family you thought and never realized until it was too late?

College freshman Marin is alone. Physically. Emotionally. Metaphorically. Her mom died when she was a toddler. Raised by her recently departed, loving but distant grandfather, Marin truly is without family. She's alone in the dorms over the winter holidays, awaiting a visit from Mabel, the best friend she's been ignoring since she fled San Francisco after her grandfather's death.

Nina LaCour has written such an achingly haunting story of loneliness and grief. Marin is hurting so much, she can barely speak. She's ignored Mabel's calls, texts, emails and letters for months. Now, face to face, Marin still can't express her pain. We would all be so lucky to have a friend like Mabel, understanding, patient and loving.

WE ARE OKAY is more a character study through grief and enlightenment than a plot driven story. I don't think everyone will love LaCour's latest masterpiece as much as me, depending on mood and the type of stories that move them.

The further into the story I read, the more hooked I was and the more I worried about a certain negative outcome. I rooted for a specific positive ending, although figured it would be unlikely based on the direction of the narrative. I never could have predicted the resolution.

WE ARE OKAY is a quiet story dripping with emotion. It's the type of book I know I will read and reread for deeper depth and understanding each time. I believe this may be one of those stories I reread every year or so, for the beauty of the words, story and message.

If WE ARE OKAY sounds like your type of book, you will love it. Even if not now, there may be a time in your life where it speaks to you.

Short, powerful novel

First, 2 things: This cover is absolutely stunning. & second, this is my first Nina LaCour novel and I have to say that I was blown away by this short, powerful novel.

This story starts with Marin who, we know, is suffering from some kind of grief and afraid of being alone. But it's Christmas break at her university and since she has nowhere else to be she is staying at the dorms all by herself for a month or so. She half wants to/is half afraid of snuggling up in her bed and never getting up again. But her old friend Mabel is coming to visit for 3 days so she can't do that just yet.

Mabel is a reminder of Marin's past. Marin hasn't returned any of Mabel's messages for months but now Mabel will be in the same room with her and she will have to deal with that past and with her lingering feelings for Mabel, whatever those may be.

This is a short novel and not a lot happens because this is not a plot-driven book. But it packs a powerful punch emotionally. It's about grief, it's about dealing with finding out someone is not completely who thought you were, it's about dealing with loneliness, and love. And this book spoke to me. Gripped me. Such beautiful prose and such strong emotion.

I will say that the reason I would not give this a full 5 stars is because there were some bits that struck as being somewhat unrealistic. Not that they could never happen, just that they probably don't often happen. But maybe I'm jaded. Who knows?

Not a bad read, but too YA for my taste

"I was okay just a moment ago. I will learn to be okay again."

This is a quick and easy read about grief and loneliness with some truly beautiful passages.

Marin abruptly left her old life in California following the death of her Gramps, her guardian since her mother's passing. Now, it's Christmas break and Marin is the only one left at her New York campus. Her old friend, Mabel, is on her way to visit for a few days, and it'll be the first time they talk or see each other in months.

But being together again will force Marin to confront the secrets and regrets that have given rise to the deep loneliness inside her.
It's a tender and touching story—but maybe just a little too tender and touching for my taste. I loved LaCour's prose and even highlighted a few passages, but the carefully crafted sentimentality of the story felt too much like YA.

There's definitely an audience for this book and many readers who will love it. It just wasn't completely for me.

It's a rule book, not the Declaration

I've read a lot about this book being anti-feminist and there are lots of perfectly "logical" arguments out there about it, but here is my two cents:

First off, when you read a book you should take what you like and leave the rest. Think for yourself.

That said, this book does a great job at what it promises: providing direction for a more successful love life. A few women made the following comment: "If the book is so great, why are there still single people?" Aside from some of the obvious answers which render this question so absolutely STUPID, I think it's a good idea to remember that love and romance are very tricky, elusive subjects and we will never have them completely fleshed out. Times change, people change. But there are some concepts that really run deep (such as men, no matter how shy, being a "certain" way, which has produced a societal structure which we are finally attempting to fix but will probably take a long time to), and I think "The Rules" (as well as other fabulous books that I highly recommend, like Kara King's "Power of the Pussy" and Sherry Argov's "Why Men Love Bitches") really connects with this notion. Until men and women are truly equal in all aspects (not just "profession" while in their love lives men still treat woman in a weird conquest-y way), it is wise to accept that they're a different animal and beat them at their own game rather than naively try to play the game that's only in your own head.

I love that this book offers a simple, feminine (I say feminine because I do think that mystery and wonder, while accessible to every individual, are qualities that inherently have a sort of feminine energy) mindset. I love that it feels like I'm in a school all about the game of love. I love the idea that there are unspoken rules out there. When I have a million things on my mind and I'm trying to enjoy myself with my favorite guy, I like to have a comfortable position to fall into. I think The Rules encourages all the wonderful experiences that being in love and dating have to offer -- they just make the road much less bumpy.

If you read, learn; but enjoy yourself. That's what it's all about.

A Way to Meet the Wrong Man and Have an Unhappy Marriage

I consider myself a nice man and wondered why I'm not having much luck in the dating game. I read THE RULES and now understand why. When women treat me the way THE RULES suggest, I don't want to date them anymore.

The best relationships start off as friendships and the happiest marriages are those where you consider your partner your best friend. But when women treat me with Rule #5: "Don't call him and rarely return his calls," I'm not interested in even being friends, because friends don't treat each other that way.

Since I cannot read a woman's mind, I assume that not returning my phone calls is a signal she's not interested in me. As the authors state on p.6, THE RULES are to teach women how to play hard to get. But playing hard to get means that women will attract men who don't take "no" for an answer. "No" means "try harder." Is this the kind of man an intelligent women wants to attract? More likely it leads to misunderstandings, sexual harassment, and date rape.

THE REAL RULES by Barbara De Angelis, Ph.D. are what I hope women will pay attention to. Rule #1: "Treat men the way you want them to treat you." It seems so obvious, but goes against everything in THE RULES. Rule #5: "Be yourself." Again, this is the opposite of THE RULES which tell you to pretend to be someone you're not so you can attract Mr. Right. But if Mr. Right falls in love with the person you pretend to be, how will he feel when he discovers you are not that person? He will feel tricked and angry because you lied to him and were playing games.

THE RULES is a book written to teach women how to lie, how to play games, and how to manipulate men. I'm not interested in women like that, and the men those women do catch are probably stupid Neanderthals. If those are the kind of men women want, then they should buy this book and follow THE RULES carefully.

Saved My Life !!!!

I am really thankful to the authors for bringing both Rules I and Rules II. I read these books at a time in my life when I was at my lowest. I was desperately clinging onto a man who did not love me back. I was hurt and my self-esteem was at an all-time low.
When I first picked up the book in the library, I thought it was so stupid and shallow. But I decided to go ahead and read it anyway. All of a sudden everything started falling in place. I saw everything I did wrong when I was with the man I thought I loved. Eventually the relationship soured because of my neediness. All I can tell you is that the Rules helped me to gracefully let go of him. I got my self-esteem back and am beginning to love myself in ways I never thought possible. There is still a lot of learning and growing to do but I know I am in the right direction.
Although I am not in the relationship anymore, when I am in contact with my ex, he wonders about my change. He is surprised at how different I am now. All of a sudden, I also noticed that he now talks to me with respect and wonder. I think he can't believe that I let go of him without a fuss. I still care for him but I no longer feel obligated to do anything about it. If he really wants me, he has to make the moves again. As for me, I am content finally. If there is someone in my life, that will be great. If not I am just learning to love myself more and more everyday.

I had no idea that this book existed! I was looking for a copy of "Tourist Season", my all-time favorite Carl Hiaasen book, and I discover it bound with my second favorite, "Double Whammy"!! Who could ask for anything more???!!! Hiaasen has the most wonderfully dark humor and an assortment of believably bizarre characters whose disturbing interactions are what create the story that is too good to put down. Hiaasen is the consumate rebellious environmentalist! The fact that "Skintight" was the third book in this collection is just the icing on the cake.Do yourself a favor...discover Florida native Carl Hiaasen's not-so-subtle and well-placed animosity about the destruction of what he loved about Florida through his colorful characters. Caution: Contents of Hiaasen's books may be addictive!

I bought this book for a Theology class I took during college, but have used it since as a guide for daily devotions. Its prayers take on a natural rhythm throughout the year, and I feel connected to a larger tradition knowing that others use this same book to guide their own daily worship. Great Resource

I am an ordained minister in the Wesleyan theological background and we do not have a resource like this. I bought this and was skeptical but after I received it and used it, it is a must have for all minister's libraries. It already has helped my daily walk with the Lord in the daily prayer. And has awesome services for many different situations.

This is a Jewel!

An amazing resource for anyone who is interested in learning worship, prayers, and other insights for spiritual growth. I wish this were also available for Kindle like the companion to the book of common worship, which I recommend to get as well. With these two Scripture-saturated resources I am getting - among other things - such an in-depth understanding of true worship, that helps my daily walk with the Lord. Hallelujah!

A GREAT BOOK ON POLITICAL THEORY AS CRITICAL THINKING

The author uses a combination of reconstructed knowledge and the sociology of knowledge to make clear some of the complex idea of major Western political thinkers. I highly recommend this book to beginner and seasoned scholar alike.
