King John, a history play by William Shakespeare, dramatises the reign of John, King of England (ruled 1199–1216), son of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine and father of Henry III of England. It is believed to have been written in the mid-1590s but was not published until it appeared in the First Folio in 1623. King John receives an ambassador from France, who demands, on pain of war, that he renounce his throne in favour of his nephew, Arthur, whom the French King, Philip, believes to be the rightful heir to the throne. John adjudicates an inheritance dispute between Robert Falconbridge and his older brother Philip the Bastard, during which it becomes apparent that Philip is the illegitimate son of King Richard I. Queen Eleanor, mother to both Richard and John, recognises the family resemblance and suggests that he renounce his claim to the Falconbridge land in exchange for a knighthood. John knights the Bastard under the name Richard.

Shakespeare's First Falstaff

KING JOHN has one of Shakespeare's best death scenes and a character, Faulconbridge the bastard son of Richard the Lion Hearted, who is a first draft for Falstaff -- and better integrated into the play's main action than Falstaff is. It's unique among Shakespeare's works in being about Realpolitik in a genuine historical context -- as if a modern American playwright should write a play about George Washington's political compromises, complete with a presentation of the real historical situations that led up to them. Faulconbridge is there to make cynical comments, and yet remain loyal to King John, who almost, but not quite, becomes a child murderer in the course of the action. Earlier, the complexities of wartime politics are revealed when a town refuses to admit either the King of England or the King of France as its rightful ruler until the two kings have fought out the question first -- whereupon the two kings decide to agree on a truce, just long enough to wipe the town out together, then go back to fighting one another. The play is a wonderful mix of history and ironic commentary, one of two plays of Shakespeare's that is entirely in verse (the other one is RICHARD II, which he wrote just before KING JOHN), and it's tragically poetic and satiric in equal measure. Shakespeare never wrote anything else quite like it. If he wrote better plays, they were also different kinds of plays: this one is unique. The Folger edition has excellent notes for beginning students; the Oxford edition is for more advanced students, and also exceptionally good.

A little too close to the current political environment

Although I didn't really take pleasure in reading this one, it absolutely confirms the timeless nature of Shakespeare's works.

A king of England (who arrived at the throne under a cloud only hinted at in the play) leads his nation in war with France, and in the process orders ugly things be done in his name. Sycophants, schemers, and cynics critique his every move (without really accepting any responsibility themselves). An illegitimate cousin is the harshed critic and the voice of reason throughout. In the end, the innocent lose their lives, the king has to make sleazy deals, and it draws to a grim conclusion.

If you are a passionate fan of the Bard's comedies, you might give this one a pass.

Even in my four sentence summary, the timeless and unchanging reality of international politics comes through. There is a bit of dark relief though; whatever you think of politicians today, regardless of the hyperbole of people who exercise their First Amendment rights without exercising common courtesy or rational thought, the current crop of political leaders are neither better nor worse than the inspirations for a play written four hundred years ago.

Historically, the mildness of the political rhetoric is worthy of note, in contrast to the venom of others in England in the time. This is another play that benefits from an appreciation of the complexities and conflicts of Elizabethan England.

Reading this one was not pleasure, but possessed a grim satisfaction.

Memorable characters, memorable lines, and a page-turner

I was drawn to "King John" because of Claire McEachern, who wrote the introduction. In case you don't know, Ms McEachern is a Shakespeare scholar and professor at UCLA who has written several intros for The Pelican Shakespeare series. Her insight into Prince Hal ("Henry IV, Pt. 1") is the most insightful I have read. It got me reading her other introductions, including this one for "King John." Thanks to her, I read the play, which is rarely performed today, but is in fact first-rate Shakespeare, with a cast of memorable characters, memorable lines, and a page-turner to boot. This is the same King John who was forced into signing the Magna Charta, which Shakespeare left out of the play. Why? Apparently, Queen Elizabeth did not want to be reminded of it, and being politically astute the Bard was not going to be the one to remind her. For the record, King John reigned from 1199 to 1216. As with history, so with Shakespeare's play, King John is not an admirable character. He's a snake, a political expedient who plays Rome to his own advantage, gets fearless Richard Plantagenet (a.k.a. "the Bastard") to lead his army, and who is not above having his rivals for the throne put to death.

The play revolves around young Arthur, rightful heir to the throne that John has so ignobly usurped. King Philip of France supports Arthur's claim and threatens an invasion. John invades France first and the result is a comedy of errors revolving around both armies and the town of Angiers in France. The looming battle is resolved by the marriage of Blanche, niece to King John, and Lewis, Dauphin of France. John then has Arthur imprisoned, which leads to another war between England and France, and allows Shakespeare the opportunity to create yet another of his great female characters, Constance, mother of Arthur. Her lines alone make "King John" worthwhile. Another of the great Shakespearean characters is the Bastard, Sir Richard Plantagenet. He's the type Shakespeare seems to relish--forthright, brutally honest, funny, irreverent, and truly a brave heart. Think actor Richard Burton in "The Taming of the Shrew" and you have the type. Indeed, Burton played the Bastard at the Old Vic, in 1953. The Bastard has the most lines and, as with Constance, makes "King John" resonate. Final note: "King John" is written completely in verse, the only Shakespearean play besides "Richard II" to be so presented.

Gray and Kiera's story

Gray Sherbrooke was arriving back in Rhode Island for his brother's Trent's and Addision (Addy) wedding. Getting there just hours before and not much time to spare. He had wanted to get in several day prior but work kept him busy these days, in fact this past year. He hadn't met his cousin's son. and wanted to spend time with his dad and stepmother Abby. Also looking forward to Mathieu's cooking who was his personal chef and would prepare some of his favorite dishes.

Kiera is attending the wedding, she grew up with the Sherbrooke's as her mother Annette was the head gardener and her father was Mathieu the personal chef. Annette and Mathieu and Kiera were really considered part of the family in away since they have worked for them and she had grown up with the boys and Allison the sister. It's always fun coming to see everyone and at a wedding is always fun to visit to catch up with everyone's lives.

Gray and Keira immediately felt sparks never had had before as they hadn't see one another since they were all grown up. They dance the night away. He asked her to lunch which seemed harmless or was it!! Immediately they settled into a relationship but wanted to keep it under wraps as she knew her parents would had qualms since they worked for 'them'. But soon his brother Trent found out who agreed to keep their secret but how long before the rest who know, and then there was Grays's secret which could tear them apart all together.

The book is full of romance, suspense, humor, it was a real page turner. The secret is not what I thought it was going to be!! LOL love each Sherbrooke book better than the other it seems. But in reality I love them all and just can't wait to read the next one,since Christina always gets us caught up with the family!

I really enjoyed all the previous Sherbrookes series of books

I really enjoyed all the previous Sherbrookes series of books. However, I was somewhat disappointed with this one. The friendship between Gray and Kiera was great. I didn't care for the secret life of Gray and how it gets resolved though...I thought it was too simplistic. And the one big negative for this book was all the editing errors. I can't believe the author went to print with all the grammatical and sentence structure errors as well as all the misused words in this book. It needs another professional editing!

Another winner about the Sherbrooke family. Loved that Kiera and Gray found each other at a family wedding having been childhood friends. The surprise at the ending was great. (i did expect it though) Christine never disappoints with this Sherbrooke family.

Excellent book

While I agree, it could explain some things in more detail, to make them clearer, it is a great book for beginners. The other reviewer said it had no markings, no audio which doesn't make sense to me. First of all, its not a course book, its a grammar book. Most grammar books do not come with audio; none of the McGraw-Hill grammar books for other languages come with audio. They already assume that if you are reading the material and writing the lessons in the book, you already know what the words are, what they mean and how they sound/pronounced. Same for markings; they teach you in most courses from the early beginning stages, here and also in the Middle East, not to rely on markings to learn words. They introduce you to a word once or twice and then you never see the markings again. They do away with them early in language learning so you don't use them as a crutch, because newspapers, books and magazines in Arabic, mostly do not have markings for you to sound out every word, its assumed you already know. I think he was looking for a course book and this isn't one. If you don't know how to read Arabic already, understand some vocabulary and can't figure out how to pronounce Arabic words without markings, then maybe you should wait until you get a little further before you buy this book. If you can't read in Arabic script simple sentences like, "My name is...", "I want this book", or other really simple sentences, you may struggle but I would suggest getting it anyway! If you do, it is a good book for not only picking up grammar but in helping you structure simple sentences and learn some new vocabulary. It also helps you retain words and practice Arabic, by making you write lessons down in the book in ARABIC not English; I love that about this book! That helps you to also, practice your handwriting and thinking in your head on how to structure sentences, in Arabic and get away from English. Pronouns and prepositions is one of the things in Arabic that can give most beginners, frustration and headaches and this book is good at showing you how to use them with example sentences and having you write down sentences so that you can reinforce that in your memory. Great beginner book, and by that I mean, mid-beginner not brand new beginner; it really is worth buying. If you are intermediate or advanced, it will probably be too basic for you but would be great to have as a reference book!

I purchased this book as part of the commonly bought together three pack of Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Vocabulary, Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Pronouns and Prepositions and Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Verb Tenses.

As someone who was attempting to learn the language on his own, I found these books to be helpful with providing me with the basics of the language, not to mention providing extra words, phrases and other helpful terms. Plus, getting three 190+ page books for ~$30, it was also a great bargain.

This is an excellent book for understanding and practicing Arabic grammar/ sentence structure. It gives thorough explanations and so much practice. Each small activity builds upon the next. This book takes the mystery out of Arabic sentence structure!

First let me say that I am a big Ali Vali fan. I buy her books the day they're released and I have never been disappointed with any of her work until now. The writing and editing are as always, far and away...well above average....but the story and main two characters of the "Romance Vote" are dull and tedious. I had a difficult time finishing the book. I kept waiting for something to happen....some kind of spark or anything to liven things up, but it just didn't happen. I'm sorry to say that the "Romance Vote" does not get my vote....it's flat out boring.

I could not finish this book.

I have read everyone of Ali's books and I loved almost all of them. The Romance Vote however, I struggled within the first 6 pages. I was lost, and I did not understand what was talking. So, I set it aside. I assumed that it was not the read for me at that moment. I picked it back up, and started from page one. I got to page 9 and I put it down again. I was shocked to see the run on sentences, and the few missing punctuation. I cannot finish the book. I am sure there is a story in there somewhere, but I am struggling to follow the story. I will not let this sway me from purchasing her books in the future, but I will read the teaser first from here on out.

This was a great read. I found it very good. The author did a wonderful job holding my attention, I don't as a rule read romance novels but it was suggested to me from a friend. I loved it.

Read, Read, Read!

I have always loved anything to do with ghosts, so this naturally grabbed my attention right away. The interactions between the main character and the spirit were my favorite scenes! And the part with the jealous boyfriend had me on the edge of my seat. On top of that, by the time you finish, you will wish you had a friendship like Harrison's and Mich's. Read, read, read!

Mystery, romance, and ghosts – oh my!

Harrison and Mitch (Michelle) have been best friends since 4th grade and are now NYC roommates dealing with 30-something malaise. But drastic change is coming, beginning on Mitch’s rainy birthday night.
Harrison’s case of writer’s block is suddenly cured after hearing a beautiful and mysterious woman singing in a run-down hotel. He learns her story then writes his best book ever, which leads to dilemmas both good and bad for several key characters.
You know a story is good when you want to reach through your Kindle and slap some sense into the protagonist! Harrison is not perfect; sometimes irritating but always interesting. There are mysteries to solve, problems to take care of, and hard choices to make. A fun read for mature readers.
